Steep ridges in the Soulanes de Nore Forest south of the Montagne Noire.

Loop, on little-known trails or ones we create, reserved for experienced walkers who are willing to follow the GPX track and are not afraid to take poorly marked trails, most of which are unmarked.

Description of the walk

From Villeneuve-Minervois, take the D112 towards Cabrespine. After the northern exit of the village, turn left onto the D712 towards Trassanel and the Limousis cave. Go through the village of Trassanel and keep going north on the paved road, which turns into concrete. At the end of the concrete, turn right onto the gravel track. Go around a bend to the left and park on a flat grassy area at a large spot where the tracks cross.

(S/E) Head north-east on the slightly downhill track (sign prohibiting motor vehicles). Ignore a path on the right shortly afterwards.

(1) Ignore the track that climbs up to the right and head north. Pass a firefighting water tank, head west-northwest and climb. After a right-hand bend, you will come to another intersection of tracks.

(2) Turn left onto a grassy track and stay on the edge of the pine forest. The descent is quite steep until you reach a small grassy plateau.

(3) Continue on a path (which we cleared in places to make it easier to pass) marked with cairns. Stay as close to the ridge as possible, following the cairns, and descend steadily. You will arrive at the edge of the Ruisseau de la Grave.

(4) Turn right and follow the stream on your left.

(5) After about 200 m, cross the Ruisseau de la Grave, leave Picarot Bas on your right, and turn left. Climb in a south-westerly direction, then west. After a right-hand bend, join a wide stony track.

(6) Follow the track to the left. Continue along the track, which is fairly flat, until you reach the Croix de Viallèle.

(7) Take a hairpin bend to the left onto a downhill track. At the first bend in the track, continue straight ahead (shortcut). You will quickly rejoin the track and follow it downhill.

(8) Cross the Ruisseau de Viallèle Près (usually dry) and continue downhill towards the south. Follow a few hairpin bends, ignoring the paths on the left. Eventually, the path follows the dry bed of the Ruisseau de Viallèle Près and ends in the wide bed of the Ruisseau de la Grave.

(9) Turn left and walk uphill for about 100 metres, following the stream, which disappears at times. Take a slightly steep ramp on the right.

(10) Turn right onto a path located on a sort of bench above the stream. After about 150 metres, turn right at the hairpin bend. Climb up to a path intersection.

(11) Turn left and you will reach the ruins of Piquotalen.

(12) Then turn right and follow a challenging path that climbs up to the ridge. Further on, join a grassy path.

(13) Follow this path to the south-east (ignore a cairned trail further to the left). Then head east and reach a new intersection.

(14) Turn left, still on a grassy path. Walk east-northeast for a long time until you reach a stony track.

(15) Follow the track to the left, continuing straight ahead. Ignore a track on the right and arrive at a junction of three tracks.

(16) Turn right (south). The track immediately curves eastwards. Ignore a track coming from the left (not shown on the 1:25,000 map), then one that branches off to the right. You will arrive at the parking area (S/E).

You are probably the first people to do this hike since it was published on Visorando. Despite the hours of work that went into creating this loop (searching for the route, clearing vegetation, marking the trail, etc.), I was worried that hikers who didn't know the area as well as we do would have some difficulty following it. I am very happy that this was not the case for you, and I am delighted to have been able to offer you the "adventure" we wanted to give you, which you thoroughly enjoyed. Your rating is a reward and a real recognition of all the work we have done. Thank you.

Superb!
A hint of adventure, a very varied route, welcome moments of shade (on a ridge road, you can expect to be very exposed).
It took us exactly 5 hours and 25 minutes, including breaks.
- a couple of things to bear in mind: getting there by car isn't easy. An SUV or people carrier is fine, but a low car is more difficult (1 km of stony track; parking available at the bottom of the track).
- The route is very well marked, especially the new part, with cairns everywhere. If you don't see any for 50 metres on the downhill section after the grassy path, there's a problem.
- it's still possible to get lost at junctions, mainly in the forest section; we never had to turn back, but we did veer off twice and then found the trail again; you have to enjoy this adventurous side.
- The start of the second climb is in full sun (like the first descent), so bring plenty of water—two litres per person seems to be the minimum.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience, with the feeling of rediscovering ancient paths (many places with low walls...and with vegetation reclaiming its rights), of passing through animal trails where humans rarely go (except for forest rangers, I'm sure; in any case, we only came across one couple doing another hike on a trail perpendicular to ours!

Thank you!
