Grand Tour of Plogoff

This long hike combines two routes already available on Visorando: “Land and Sea around Plogoff” and “Tour of Pointe du Raz from Plogoff”.
It takes you past some of the most iconic spots in this town at the tip of Finistère: Baie des Trépassés, Pointe du Raz and the sheltered harbours of Bestrée, Feunteun Aoad and Pors Loubous, not to mention the beautiful architectural heritage, including two chapels.

Description of the walk

From Audierne, head towards "Plogoff - Pointe du Raz" via the D784 and continue for 8 km to Anse du Loc’h, where you can park on the left.

PR®® marked in yellow, mainly with signposts.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, cross the D784 at the pedestrian crossing, turn right, then left at the corner of a crêperie onto the Route de Cléden-Cap-Sizun. After about 100 m, turn left onto Rue du Yun, which climbs towards the Loc’h housing estate. At the bend in the road, near a transformer, take a path on the right that leads to a street in the hamlet of Landrer. Look out for the small Saint-André Chapel on the left (Iron Age stele near the chapel).

(1) Cross the hamlet and, at the end of the dead-end street, continue along the path that descends into the valley until you reach a junction.

(2) Turn left and walk along the hillside, ignoring the paths that descend towards the valley floor. Head uphill to reach the hamlet of Trogor and cross it by turning right. In this hamlet, note the beautiful architecture with its houses bearing inscriptions carved into the granite.

(3) On leaving the hamlet, take the path lined with cypress trees at the start, then turn left, heading west, along lovely paths until you reach a small road at the entrance to Plogoff. Follow it to the left and cross the car park on your right.

(4) On leaving the car park, walk past Saint-Collodan Church (note the ship carvings on the south side and on the bell tower), first turn left then right to take the dead-end road on the right before the cemetery, and continue along the path that leads downhill. At the first fork, turn left twice and head back up towards the hamlet of Kerhas (at the far end of the cemetery opposite).

(5) Follow the road to the right, ignore a dead-end on the left and, at the Kerisbleis sign, turn onto a path on the right which crosses a wooded area and leads onto the access road to the two houses at Kerguen.

(6) Go round them on the left and continue along a dirt track that passes near a fountain and a wash house with a tiled floor, and, on the right, a large garden and orchard. Continue westwards, ignoring the access roads to the hamlet of Le Manoir. Continue along the hillside.

(7) Turn right at the “Point de Vue” sign: beautiful views over the Baie des Trépassés and the Étang de Laoual. Retrace your steps and continue to the right on the PR®.

No signposting

Leave the PR® as it turns left and join the D607.

(8) Cross the road with care, then continue straight ahead (west) along Rue des Moulins to pass through the hamlet of Kerherneau.

PR® markings (yellow) in the opposite direction

At the end, turn left onto a quiet path which joins Rue des Ajoncs d’Or; follow this to the right until you reach a crossroads.

(9) Turn right onto Rue Bellevue Laoual, which continues as a lane past a wash house (beautiful view of Baie des Trépassés). Head down towards the D607 and follow it to the left to reach Baie des Trépassés: panoramic view between Pointe du Raz and Pointe du Van.

GR®® 34 and GRP® Tour du Cap Sizun

(10) With your back to the beach, take the coastal path that climbs, passing two blockhouses on the left of Baie des Trépassés. Overlooking the sea, continue towards Pointe du Raz (opposite, the Phare de la Vieille and, further on, the Île de Sein).Continue to the end of the path, facing the rocky headland.

(11) Turn left to pass close to it, then past the “Notre Dame des Naufragés” statue, and rejoin the coastal path which continues south-east. Pass a headland and find a path on the right leading down to the sheltered harbour of Bestrée, a port formerly used by lighthouses and beacons to resupply offshore lighthouses and relieve lighthouse keepers.

(12) Head up the small access road reserved for users and, at the bend, leave it to continue along the coastal path which descends into a small valley.

(13) Cross a footbridge, head uphill and, further on, reach a path on the left (PR® Tour de Plogoff). Continue towards Pointe de Feunteun Aod (note the low-growing broom).

(14) Head up the GR® path, keeping to the path closest to the coast, to discover the small sheltered harbour of Feunteun Aod (Fontaine de la Grève) (information panel). Follow the access road to the harbour up to the start of a path through the moorland.

(15) Turn right onto the path closest to the coast and continue due east along the coastal path that follows the seashore at the top of the cliff, then descend into a small valley (footbridge).

(16) Head back up, cross two more footbridges and arrive at the access road to the sheltered harbour of Pors Loubous, which was, in the 1920s, the most important in Plogoff. A monument commemorates the role played by this harbour in sheltering members of the Resistance in the winter of 1940 (information panel).

(17) Retrace your steps and head up the access road to the small harbour. Follow this road, Chemin des Époux Normands, then Rue Honoré d'Estienned'Orves, which runs through the large hamlet of Pennéac'h.

(18) Turn right into Rue Louis Pasteur, which forms a large circular loop and continues as Rue Joliot-Curie, crossing Rue Honoré d'Estienned'Orves. Continue straight ahead along Rue Jean Jaurès (cross) and join a path on the right.

PR®® marked in yellow

(19) Turn onto this signposted path, cross a road and continue along the footpath and cycle path which joins the road running through the hamlet of Kergroas. Take it to the right, pass a cross in a grassy enclosure, and arrive at the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Voyage, built between 1698 and 1703 following a vow, offering a beautiful view of Audierne Bay.

(20) Go round the chapel and continue along the path that descends to the right, through the moorland, to rejoin the coastal path you left earlier.

GR®® 34 and GRP® Tour du Cap Sizun

(21) Pass Pointe de Plogoff on your right and head left, following the GR®34. Go round a headland marked by an isolated house (view of Anse de Loc’h and the Primelin coast), turn left and walk along this cove. Cross a small pebble beach and come out onto a small road (incorrectGR®® route).

(22) Follow it to the D784 and turn right to return to the car park near the beach (S/E).

Notes

Sturdy footwear is recommended, and walking poles may be useful.
This trail requires careful attention (stones, roots) and involves a mix of ascents and descents.
If you are accompanied by children, please be very careful! The path is well-marked but often runs along the edge of cliffs (though it isn’t particularly vertiginous).

At Pointe du Raz, please stick to the paths that have been marked out to revitalise the vegetation.

Refreshments available in the village of Plogoff.

Worth a visit

A lovely walk inland, with a particularly pleasant section through the woods.
A lovely discovery of the Pointe du Raz, which is quite busy!
Then a lovely section of the GR on the way back, through unspoilt countryside, where you can choose whichever coastal paths you like.
The local heritage sites are lovely, such as the Chapelle Saint André or Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Voyage (both closed).
Completed in under 5 hours 15 days ago by an experienced walker; if you want to try a long circular route rather than the shorter variants, this is a good option.
