Description of the walk

Head to the Pointe de Brézellec car park.

(S/E) From the car park, look for the wooden signpost marked “Pointe de Brézellec Commune de Cléden-Cap-Sizun” and head towards “Pors Théolen”.
Follow the coast, staying on the same path (GR® 34 red and white markings), until you reach Pors Théolen, where there is a bistro on the right (not always open).

(1) Return to theGR® (wooden signpost) towards “Pointe de Castelmeur” and arrive at a fork in the path.

(2) Turn right and continue on the GR®. At the wooden signpost, stay on theGR® towards "Pointe du Van" and continue until you reach the access point to Pointe de Castelmeur.

(3) Take the narrow path on the right leading to the Pointe de Castelmeur viewpoint. At the end of this path, take in the view: with your back to the path, to the right is the route you have taken, and to the left is the Pointe du Van.

(4) Then retrace your steps by taking the narrow path again.

(3) Turn right to continue westwards on theGR® until you reach a fork.

(5) Turn right to continue on theGR®, leaving thePR® behind on your left. Continue along the steep coastal path to reach Pointe du Van. Take in the view: to your right, the path you have taken; to your left, in the distance, the Tévennec Lighthouse.

(6) Return tothe GR® and, at the wooden post, head towards “Port du Vorlen”. Follow the path as close as possible to the coast, then head towards the Chapelle Saint-They. Enjoy the view: from left to right, the Pointe du Raz, the Phare de la Vieille and the Île de Sein.

(7) With your back to the chapel, there is a narrow path leading to the Fontaine Saint-Mathieu. Do not take this path, but take the wide track to the right of the one leading to the Fontaine Saint-Mathieu and continue until you reach a large stone cross. There, turn left, then immediately right, and you will come to a PR®.

(8) Continue straight on along this path, ignoring the others, until you reach the hamlet of Keriolet, situated by the low stone wall. Go round the hamlet on the left until you rejoin theGR®34coastal path.

(5) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there and head back to Pors Théolen. Go round the bistro on the right and continue along theGR® for a very short while until you reach a junction with a small path, which you crossed on the way there.

(1) Leave theGR® and take this small path on the right, which climbs through the vegetation. Once the climb levels off, do not turn right, but continue straight on. You will arrive near the hamlet of Théolen and rejoin the PR®.

(9) Turn left onto this path and continue, ignoring the paths to the left, until you reach the junction with the road leading to Pointe de Brézellec.

(10) Then turn left to reach the car park at Pointe de Brézellec (S/E).

A superb walk along the coast... You can go for a swim on the way there or back at the lovely beach at Théolen... it was a bit busy on this August Sunday when we arrived at the Pointe du Van and the Sainte They chapel, but we were just passing through. Thanks for the well-planned route (4 hours 20 minutes without the picnic or swim (but with 1,000 photo stops 🤩))

On the first leg – the “outward” journey – to the chapel, there’s only one thing to say: it’s brilliant. For the return leg, rather than retracing much of the same route as on the outward journey and for a change (hence my rather harsh “good” rating for the route’s interest), I preferred to veer off it slightly to stay more on the inland side, which also offers interest and variety in its views with a few small hamlets: Kériolet with its two mills at the exit, Kerinon, Kernot and Kerbesquerrien. I noted it was “very busy” (especially around the chapel and the Pointe du Van), but on this very sunny Saturday in August, there was still plenty of space to hike in peace. Well worth doing again and again
