Forests and meadows as you cross the Céronne

A walk through woods and lovely views over wide meadows, crossing the Céronne river time and again
There are no signposts, but there are numerous small posts along the route indicating directions (localities and hamlets), installed by the “Chandareurs”, the Navaroise walking and mountain biking association.

Description of the walk

Start from the new cemetery, known as the Faugères cemetery. Easy parking.

(S/E) After walking along the wall, facing due west, take a wide path that immediately leaves the road. Then take the first path on the right which climbs up to Bois Gendre. At the hamlet, turn right onto the road to cross the bridge over the motorway, then immediately left to take the small road leading to La Pérussie.

(1) In the hamlet of La Pérussie, turn right onto a wide path between two houses, clearly signposted by a signpost for “Bouysse”. Follow the main path, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left. Descend into the woods, then cross the Céronne before climbing back up a wide track to the road, which you take to the right.

(2) About 130 m further on, take a wide path on the left (signpost “la Croix de Marthon, Céron”). Follow this path, ignoring the paths branching off to the left. After following the edge of the woods and admiring the view over the meadows, you’ll reach a wood.

(3) Enter the woodland onto the well-marked path on the right, which is sometimes damp (ruts).

(4) Just as you leave the woodland, opposite a signpost, before the crossroads, take a small path on the right towards Céron. Enjoy the view. Continue straight on, ignoring the path that climbs further to the left, and head down towards Céron (this path is often damp as a stream seems to be carving out a channel here).

(5) At the road, head straight towards the centre of the hamlet and the Saint-Clément-Naves road, which you take on the right to descend once more towards the Céronne

:6:: Once past the stream, turn right onto a wide track which then climbs (a bit of a cardio workout!) up to Bassaler.

(7) Walk straight through the hamlet to join a path that leads to another path running alongside the motorway; take this to the left to climb towards Bach. Before the climb, you can make a short detour to see the sources of the Solane (10 mins round trip).

(8) In Bach, take the road and follow it to the right, then turn right again onto the busier road (take care) which crosses the motorway after passing the stadium entrance.

(9) About 20 m after the bridge, turn right (signpost for “Faugères”) onto a path that runs alongside the motorway at a higher level, then leaves it to descend, keeping left, towards the hamlet of Faugères. The path joins a small road; take this to the right to reach the hamlet, then keep left to reach the cemetery (S/E).

Worth a visit

The River Céronne rises at Puy des Ferrieres (in the neighbouring commune of Seilhac) and flows through the commune of Naves for 10 km before joining the Corrèze at Tulle, passing through the villages of Ceron, Bouysse, La Borie and Pont de Peyrelevade. It powered several mills

In Ceron (Seroux on the Cassini map: a Gallo-Roman estate belonging to a man named ‘Serus’), near the village fountain stands a yew tree estimated to be 300 or 400 years old, likely planted by the owner of the neighbouring 17th-century building.
Did you know that docetaxel, a chemotherapy drug, is extracted from the yew tree, whose Latin name is taxus (meaning ‘poisonous’)?

In Bach, there is a castle built at the end of the 16th century, restored and extended in the 19th century, now privately owned. It is in its grounds that the Solane river rises.

A varied route alternating between wooded areas and meadows. There are hills and scenic views. Two bridges allow you to cross over the motorway, which is the only (minor) inconvenience.

A lovely walk, with a variety of landscapes – half woodland, half meadow – and some panoramic views. In this rainy spring, expect mud, tall wet grass and a small pond (yes, right on the path), so make sure you’re properly kitted out.

A very pleasant route, with plenty of footpaths, not much road and plenty of shade. I’ve already checked it out so I can take a group of friends there, and I’d be more than happy to do it again
