Water, wind and stone: a route around Seilhac

A lovely signposted route starting from Seilhac, passing by the shores of Lac de Bournazel and Étang Neuf. The route offers unobstructed views of the countryside and the monédières, particularly from the orientation point.

Description of the walk

Car park at Place de l’Horloge in Seilhac.

(S/E) Turn left onto Rue Henry de Bournazel heading north-west, cross Avenue Jean Vinatier and continue straight ahead onto Chemin du Bois de l’Arche.

(1) At the bend, continue along the one-way path on the right. The path turns left after crossing the Brezou stream, heading north-west.

(2) When you reach the road, turn left (south) onto Chemin des “Bois Grands”, which runs alongside the road downhill. At the junction, turn right onto Boulevard Jean Vinatier. Walk past the stadium on your right.

(3) Turn right in front of the stadium entrance and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. After a few metres, on the right, a path between the oak trees leads to the path on the left that runs alongside the beach.

(4) Walk along the lakeshore, then, on the other side of the lake at a place called “Sandro”, head away from the lake to rejoin the road.

(5) Take this road on the left. At the next Fork in the road, take the road on the left. Follow the road to Bournazel. Turn left again at the junction, then, after a small castle, follow the path leading straight ahead, towards the south-east, as the road bends. As you approach the D1120, at a place called “Pissevache”, take a sharp right-hand bend to rejoin the road.

(6) Cross the D1120 with care, head left and very quickly take the first road on the right; then, at the junction, take the road on the left. Next, take the first track on the left and follow the western bank of the Étang Neuf.

(7) Once you reach the southern bank, after crossing a stream, take the road on the left. Quickly leave the road on the left and take a track that runs alongside the bank. Continue along the road and, at the junction, turn left onto the track that runs alongside the bank of the pond.

(8) When the track rejoins the road, cross it and take the track opposite. It runs alongside the D1120 before veering away from it to climb up to the Route de Brudieux. Take this road on the left until you reach the junction.

(9) You can quickly return to Seilhac by turning left.
Instead, follow the road to the right until you reach the D44 at “Le Champ Lachaud”.

(10) Cross this road, then turn left and follow the road on the right-hand side. Head towards Puy des Ferrieres. After about 300 metres, turn right, then immediately left towards the radio tower.

(11) At the radio tower, climb up to the orientation table to enjoy the view. Shortly after the orientation table, take the path leading down to the right. Follow this path until you reach the road at the “Les Ferrières” crossroads

(12) At the road, you can turn left to quickly return to Seilhac.
Instead, follow the road on the right towards La Vergne. Shortly afterwards, turn left onto the path towards La Brunie. At the junction, turn left towards the north for a few dozen metres.

(13) Take the path on the right towards Soleilhavoup. After the hamlet of La Bourdeix, you’ll reach the D1120; cross it carefully, then turn left and follow the road for about a hundred metres before taking the path immediately on the right. Keep to the right until you reach a junction.

(14) At the junction, you can take the path on the left to return quickly to Seilhac. Instead, walk a few metres to the right and then straight ahead. The signposting is poor in this area. The correct path leads quickly to a water source, just before which there is a road (D23E1). Follow the road for a few dozen metres to the right, then cross it to take the path straight ahead which runs alongside the water source. Continue straight on until you reach the next road.

(15) Follow the road to the right, cross it and continue along the path opposite. At the next junction, turn left towards the west. Follow the path to the D940.

(16) Cross it carefully to take the road opposite, then turn immediately right onto Avenue Nationale and follow it to Place de l’Horloge (S/E).

A very pleasant walk with little road walking and few difficulties
Shaded sections along lovely little paths
However, the route is very poorly marked, so follow the route on the app to avoid getting lost.
Be careful when walking around the lake – make sure you go all the way round it, as it’s very difficult to walk through in places where it’s very wet.

A really enjoyable walk along the first part of the route, but a little more disappointing on the second part, apart from the area around the orientation table, which offers superb views. I can confirm that the signposting is a bit patchy towards the end, as mentioned in the description.

An easy walk due to the minimal elevation gain.

Very little road walking.

Stunning views of the Monedières.
