Description of the walk

Park in front of the war memorial in Gimel-les-Cascades.

(S/E) Take the D53E4, Route de Braguse towards the cemetery, follow this road and pass two houses, one on each side of the road.

(1) Just before the cemetery, turn left onto a path that descends into the forest. Join another path.

(2) Turn left and continue to the magnificent abandoned chapel of Saint-Étienne de Braguse.

(3) Continue along the path, cross the Montane and climb back up until you reach a road at Parc Vuillier.

(4) You can visit the Inferno chasm free of charge (return trip with a very steep slope, so take care on the path) or the Gimel waterfalls (admission fee), or simply continue on your way towards the village. Cross the bridge over the Montane.

(5) Just after the bridge over the Montane, turn right to pass by the enchanting Cascadelles waterfalls. Go up to the left, past the ruins of the Château de Haute Roche. Don't pass by the church without visiting the splendid reliquary in champlevé enamel, typical of medieval Limousin. Return to the car park via Rue de Braguse (S/E).

Worth a visit

The famous reliquary shrine of Saint Stephen, made of enamelled and gilded copper, dates from the end ofthe 12th century and is classified as a historic monument. It is located in the village church.
This chapel, perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by the Montane, is located on an ancient oratory created by Saint Dumine during the time of Clovis. Saint Dumine was a hermit who had found refuge in the woods. This site was later chosen to build a chapel in honour of Saint Stephen, the first martyr, which was for a long time the parish church of Gimel.
