The Moulin Neuf pond as seen from the Languivoa Chapel

The Languivoa Chapel was built in the 13th century and has had an eventful history. The completion of its restoration in 2017, following a long period of neglect, now draws visitors with its architecture and the romanticism of its legend. The route takes you along part of the Moulin Neuf pond.

This body of water is fed by a single stream (the Rivière de Pont-l’Abbé).

Description of the walk

The starting point is at the car park in the village of Plonéour-Lanvern, in the hamlet of Languivoa, before the Notre-Dame Chapel.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, follow the road to the right towards the Notre-Dame Chapel in Languivoa. At the crossroads, you’ll see the chapel on the right and a wayside cross on the left. In front of the building, an information board explains its history. Continue straight on until you reach the crossroads marked by an old cross.

(1) Turn left and follow this small road to the next junction.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, ignoring a turn-off on the right, pass under two high-voltage power lines, and arrive at a Fork in the road.

(3) Keep to the right and you’ll reach the path of the old Pont-Croix railway line (brown sign marked ‘lake’).

(4) Turn left onto this path and head for the Moulin Neuf lake.

(5) Turn left, follow the riverbank, ignore the path leading to the Leuré farm, go through a gate and reach a small road.

(6) Turn right, cross a small bridge, then turn right onto the path running alongside the pond and then the Pont-l’Abbé river until you reach the small footbridge crossing this stream.

(7) Ignore the footbridge on the right, head left, then left again after about fifty metres, to join the path to the hamlet of Kergoulouarn. At the house, carry straight on via Kerandraon, ignoring the path and the road on your right.

(8) Turn right (left is private property), continue to the junction, turn left and head downhill to the junction by Kervahut Farm. Turn right and return to the small bridge on the Route de Kervahut which you took on the way there. Continue along the tarmac road until the right-hand bend.

 (6) Ignore the route you’ve already taken and turn right. Pass the Kerbénoc’h Mill and continue until you rejoin the Languivoa road before the two power lines, ignoring the two roads on your left as you go.

(3) At this Fork in the road, head up to the right and retrace your steps along the outward route to reach the car park after the chapel (S/E).

Notes

Only the sections along the Pont-Croix disused railway line and the lake are on land.
The rest of the route follows small country lanes.

This route may serve as an alternative (as it avoids the Tréméoc road) for walkers who are too cautious to visit the Languivoa Chapel and the Moulin Neuf pond.

Worth a visit

We did this route on the day we got back into walking, for a change from the usual walk round the Moulin Neuf lake. There were a few narrow roads but lovely views of the countryside… before we reached the lake, which we walked alongside for quite a while. The hamlet of Languivoa is definitely worth a visit: there’s a lovely chapel which we were able to visit (a volunteer had come along) before the walk. It’s very interesting (one of the six decapitated chapels in the Bigouden region) and very pretty.
After the walk, carry on to La Chapelle de Lanvern, which is also very beautiful (another chapel with its bell tower removed). It’s a 5-minute drive away (open every day).

The route is not signposted at all from the chapel. There are signs when you reach the edge of the ‘Moulin Neuf’ pond. The walk around the pond is clearly signposted, but the route leading to it is not, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, this route leaves you with fond memories of a good walk.

I still haven’t gone on these various walks – the weather hasn’t been very favourable – but they look like very interesting walks, which I hope to do soon. Thank you, visorando.
