Kergonda and Kermorvan routes in Plonéour-Lanvern

This route combines two shortPR® routes by linking them together: the Kergonda route, which follows part of the old railway line known as the "Carrot Train", and the Kermorvan route, which winds through the countryside along wide, often stony farm tracks and ends at the Raphalen botanical garden.
The link between these two routes allows you to discover the village of Plonéour-Lanvern, dominated by the imposing bell tower of Saint-Éneour Church (19th century).

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the water tower on the street of the same name.

YellowPR® markings

(S/E) From the car park, head left towards Rue Croas ar Bleon, turn right onto this street to go round the water tower and turn left onto the first street going downhill. Follow it straight on, leaving the access road to the hamlet of Mariano on your right, until you reach the barrier marking the start of the old railway line. You will regularly come across information boards entitled “Waiting for the carrot train” (Nos. 1 to 4).

(1) Continue along the wide stony track, pass Kergonda Farm and carry on along this path lined with oak, hazel and willow trees. It overlooks a marshy area on the right where a stream flows. You’ll reach a crossroads.

(2) At a crossroads (signposted), turn right at the signpost, cross a footbridge and climb up a path that is initially grassy but then widens into a wooded farm track. Pass the campsite on your right, ignore a dead-end on the left and continue along the 30 km/h road.

(3) At the crossroads opposite a thatched cottage (Kériel on the map), turn left and continue along this small road between fields (view to the right of the village of Peumerit).

(4) At the signpost, turn left towards Kervélen Farm and continue along the path that descends into the damp valley, bordered on the left by woodland. Join the old railway line and follow it to the left, heading due east. You will come across the next set of signs marked “En attendant le train carottes” (Nos. 5 to 7). Continue to the fork in the path from the outward journey.

(2) Head up to the right along a grassy path and, after about 200 m, look out for an old wash house and a spring on the right, hidden in a copse. At the road, turn left and then, a little further on, right onto a grassy farm track. At the end (water tank on the right), follow a small road to the left (view of the village dominated by its bell tower and water tower). At the next junction, head straight up to the right and reach a junction near a small restored wayside cross.

No signposting

(5) Continue straight on, skirting the cemetery despite the Yellow Cross, and arrive at Rue Jules Ferry. Cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing, first turning left then right to take the first street on the right, Rue de la Forge (there’s a florist on the corner). Turn right into the first street and left at the three-way junction (no entry sign 50m ahead). Go round the medical centre on the left.

(6) Follow a path to the left which joins Rue Neuve, then head down this street to the right. Cross Rue Henri Lautredou with care. Continue straight ahead towards Kermorvan, Kerbreéc’h, towards the football stadium.

YellowPR® signposting

(7) At the crossroads, continue left past the stadium, then follow Allée de Ty Bout, ignoring the streets to both the right and left. This lane becomes a wide, stony farm track that winds its way through meadows and fields. After a beautiful house on the right, turn left then right onto a grassy path to reach the hamlet of Keroëc.

(8) Go round this hamlet on the right and continue along the east-facing path. At the crossroads, turn left and follow this tree-lined farm track heading north-west. Ignore the turn-offs to the left and reach a road at Kermorvan. Turn right onto the road following the signposting and reach a gate on the left.

(9) Turn left into this green area where a small stream flows and continue straight on. Cross the stream once to the right and then to the left to reach the lake.

(10) Turn right and follow the path which goes round the first two ponds on the right (the small rectangular one is barely visible), cross the footbridge and go round the last one on the left. Note a large wash house on the right and pass a playground on the left, which is set back from the path.

No signposting

Join Rue René Le Berre and follow it along the left-hand pavement, passing a biscuit factory and arriving at the junction with the D57. Cross Rue Henri Lautridou with care, follow it to the left for about ten metres and turn right into the first street, Rue de la Forge.

(11) Turn right into the narrow Rue Neuve (no visible name), which leads to a small square opposite the church. Cross the main road with care to go round the church on the right. Note the 3.50 m high Gallic stele in front of the church. Turn left into the first street behind the church, then right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Toilets at the start car park

This route can be split into two shorter routes:
- First section: at (5), turn left towards the water tower and the car park: approximately 6 km.
- Second section: park near the football pitch (7) and, after walking around the lakes, return via the point (10) to rejoin route 5, approximately 5.5 km.
Another shortcut: at (2), do not take the circular path via Lestréguéoc, Kériel and Kervélen.
Head straight up to the left.
This route is an easy 9.4km route.

A tree-lined route through the countryside offering lovely shade.

Hike on 7 May 2026. ClG and PG.
Paper maps and GPS, the two complement each other.
We set off at 1.30 pm. No particular difficulties.
Back around 4.30 pm when school finished
Perfect spring weather for a hike. We didn’t see a soul.
The path between point 1 and point 5, following in the footsteps of the Birinic train, is magnificent at this time of year.
A slight hesitation between points 5 and 7 in the village, even though the description is precise.
No problems between points 7 and 11.
We discovered the ponds in ‘RAPHALEN’ Park.
A hike not to be missed and one to do again in the autumn.

I have modified this route by adding a circular loop, bringing the distance from 9.4 to 11.5 km.
Shortcuts are marked

I have also tried to be more precise regarding the route through the village to link the two routes.
