Description of the walk

Park at Place de l’Église.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Saint-Magloire Church, take the road on the left, pass the Saint-Maudez Fountain, built into a wall at the bottom of a flight of steps on the left, and on the right a wash house also situated below. Continue along the same road, ignoring a housing estate on the left, and look out for a dovecote in a meadow on the right near the Kerandraon farm (a former manor house).

(1) Ignore the next road leading to another farm, turn left at the next road (signposted Kersavidour) and continue to an inconspicuous start of a marked path.

Yellow markings

(2) Turn right onto this wooded path which descends, passes near a wash house, then climbs again, skirting a large field and a farm (view of Pont-Croix). At the fork, veer left to join a road near the farm at Bromuel.

(3) Cross this road, enter a protected water catchment area and follow the marked route within this area. It winds its way through the various plantations (follow the yellow markings carefully).

(4) You will reach a wetland area; cross it via a boardwalk which is in poor condition (information panels)
to reach a road.

(5) Take this road to the right, pass under a power line, turn left before the Kerlambert sign onto a stony track between meadows, and emerge near the Étang de Poulguidou.

(6) Turn right and follow the stony path straight on, which leads to the hamlet of Lambabu (stone well at the entrance on the right).

(7) Turn left, cross the hamlet: fine 18th- and 19th-century buildings, Saint-Tugdual Chapel and a well. On leaving, take the fork onto the track leading to the hamlet of Lesvoual'ch. On this section, the signposting has disappeared.

(8) Go round a house and, at the corner by the recycling bins, turn left heading due north onto a tarmac section (the markings reappear), then a track to rejoin the outbound route, which you follow to the right towards the pond.

(6) Head straight into a wooded area, go round a horse paddock on the left and turn right to reach the edge of the pond.

(9) Cross the pond’s outlet via a footbridge, turn left onto the stony path, pass under a power line and reach the access to Le Goubi farm. Turn right, then left at the road coming from another farm. Continue straight on until you reach a road opposite a wood.

(10) Turn right onto this road, ignore two paths on the left and then on the right, and arrive at the start of a path through the undergrowth.

(11) Enter this partly cleared woodland, walk along the edge of a meadow to rejoin the path and reach a road near a house.

(12) Follow this road to the right, pass a roundabout and reach a path on the left before the hamlet of Stang Irvin.

(13) Enter the Stang Irvin valley (where there is a fountain and a cross).

No signposting

Follow the wide path back up to the road, turn right and walk past the visitor centre and group lodge. Continue straight on, passing a beautifully restored farmhouse on your left, and arrive at a large public garden. Note the Saint-Pierre Chapel on your right.

(14) Turn left to cross this lovely grassy area with plenty of children’s play equipment. At the exit, turn left, walk past the town hall and you’ll find the car park on the left (S/E).

Notes

Toilets are available at the car park at the start and in the public garden.
The area around the pond can be very wet and muddy in winter or after a spell of rain.

Worth a visit

A very wooded route between points (3) and (5).
Saint-Magloire Church.
Saint-Pierre Chapel, a 16th-century building, and its calvary.
Saint-Maudez fountain and dovecote.
Poulguidou Pond.
Lambabu Chapel.

Stang-Irvin Calvary: the shaft of this 13th-century calvary, like that of the crosses erected during an epidemic, bears notches symbolising the tears of Christ.

A very pleasant route, but there were two sections that were tricky to follow: on the way back, between points 6 and 9, we got a bit lost and had to retrace our steps several times before managing to find the path that branches off to the right and leads to the edge of the pond.
At the end, the description between points 12 and 13 isn’t clear; we were very unsure.
Otherwise, it’s a lovely walk!

The smartphone app is useful; it helps us find our way around. The walk is very pleasant, taking us mainly through wooded areas and along country lanes, with very few roads. A lovely route.
