The chapels of La Trinité and Saint-Ronan

This circular route offers a view of the northern part of Plozévet. From the Chapel of the Trinity, the route passes close to the wind farm before reaching the site of the small Chapel of Saint-Ronan. The return journey offers the chance to walk along part of the old railway line and the “carrot train”, then explore the churchyard with its menhir-shaped war memorial featuring sculptures by René Quillivic.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Chapelle de la Trinité in Plozévet, in the Trinité district, 1 km north-west of the village centre. The chapel is signposted.

Signposting: GR® (white and red) +PR® (yellow)

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards the cross then take the path between the trees to reach the imposing chapel. Note the door on the right and its ornamentation. Walk round the chapel in a clockwise direction to get a better sense of its size.

Follow the small road that runs alongside a beautiful property and leads to a junction opposite a new-generation transformer.

(1) Turn right then left, following the small road. Turn right, following the signposting, onto a small track that leads to a road. Follow this 30 km/h road to the left until you reach the next track.

(2) Turn right onto this uphill track. The wind turbines are in sight. At the MTB signpost, turn right onto a grassy track that runs alongside a wetland (potentially muddy in winter). You’ll emerge at a meadow.

At the junction with a wide path, leave the path to the right towards the hamlet of Kerziouret and continue north-east, still skirting a wetland.

No signposting

(3) Turn right onto the path that heads straight uphill and, at the end, turn left to go round the large hamlet of Kermenguy. Continue straight on, ignoring the small road on the right and those leading up to the hamlet.

At the next junction (grove and pylon on the right), continue straight on along a dirt track that turns left then right before joining the access road to the wind turbines.

(4) Turn right towards the south, using the plastic paper factory on the right as a landmark. At the road, take the disused road on the left towards the D784, which you will join.

(5) Cross this road with care and continue along the path opposite. Turn left, cross the village of Kerlaéron, cross a road and come out onto a new road with the water tower on your left. Turn right then left towards Trébrévan.

(6) Turn right into a reforested area dotted with five exercise stations and arrive at a car park. Continue straight on towards the site of Saint-Ronan’s Chapel, its fountain and its sarcophagus.

(7) Retrace your steps, take the track leading to the car park and join a small road at the hamlet of Mespirit.

(8) Follow this road to the left, which joins the old “carrot train” railway line before the hamlet of Kervinou.

Signposted "Saint-Demet route" in yellow with marker posts (opposite direction)

(9) Turn right and follow this old railway line towards Plozévet. Cross the first road, with a car park and a picnic area on the left. Continue straight ahead and stay on this old railway line.

Pass behind a secondary school, then the Henri le Moal Gymnasium, and arrive at the station car park.

No signposting

(10) Cross Rue de Quimper at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the left for about a hundred metres. Turn right into Impasse de la Mairie and, in front of the town hall esplanade, turn left then right towards a small roundabout.

(11) Head left towards the church and walk round it clockwise to see the menhir-shaped war memorial, the work of sculptor René Quillivic.

(12) Retrace your steps back to the roundabout.

(11) Continue along Rue Jules Ferry, which runs alongside the imposing town hall (a former boys’ school dating from 1884), then carry on along Rue des Primevères, followed by Rue des Pervenches on the left, until you reach the car park on the left (S/E).

René Quillivic (1879–1969) made his name in the field of traditional Breton funerary art.
It was particularly in the aftermath of the First World War that René Quillivic became one of Brittany’s most famous sculptors.
Almost all of Quillivic’s memorials are located in Finistère (16 in this department)
René Quillivic chose the themes for his works within a regional context, close to the hearts of the Bretons. His subjects are familiar figures, known and recognised by the people.

Pleasant hike in the Bigouden region of the interior.
No problems with the route.
The Trinity Chapel and Saint Ronan's Chapel, with its sarcophagus and fountain, are worth the hike in themselves.
We had a pleasant afternoon.

At point 1, on the narrow grassy path marked ‘Kergabet route’, a tree was blocking the way, but we managed to get past it anyway.
