Between fields and streams around Sassangy

A pleasant walk with a very varied landscape (meadows, streams, limestone plateaus, vineyards). You’ll follow the Guye river towards Cersot, with a short climb towards Montagny-lès-Buxy and a return via Mont Brogny after passing through the village of Bissey-sous-Cruchaud. Best done between September and May to avoid the intense heat, as there is very little shade. It’s possible to do it with a head torch in summer, which is very pleasant.

Description of the walk

If you are coming via the RCEA, exit at the “Aire de repos de la Guye” junction and head towards Sassangy. The start of the walk is on a bend. Parking is available at the start of the walk at the place known as En Ballat.

(S/E) Head south. The small dirt track to follow is often flooded, but there is a path round the side. Walk alongside La Guye at times.

(1) At the En Rivon farm, continue straight on along a small tarmac road; there is no traffic, and at most you will encounter a farm vehicle. Join the D977 at Les Guénins.

(2) Turn left onto the D977; 50 metres further on, turn left again at theGR® 76 D hiking signposts.

(3) Follow the D977, cross the small bridge over the Guye and turn left towards Buxy and Sassangy

(4) 150 m further on, at the Sassangy sign, cross the A977 with care and take the small road leading uphill to the right (it’s the same: at worst, you’ll only come across a farm vehicle).

(5) At the monument commemorating those “shot on 12 June 1944”, turn right and continue along this path for about 1 km.

(6) In Neuilly, turn left towards Les Bécasses and continue along this small path

(7) Cross the D97 with care. Be careful, as cars drive fast here. Continue following theGR®76.

(8) Leave it and take the small path branching off to the right. Continue through the upper part of Cruchaud, where you’ll have a lovely view of the vineyards. Arrive at La Croix de Combe.

(9) At the cemetery, turn left and, on reaching the village of Bissey-sous-Cruchaud, turn left into Rue de Béroche.

(10) Leave the tarmac road and head up the small path opposite until you reach a road.

(11) Turn right onto the small tarmac road and immediately left again, skirting the farm and heading up towards Mont Brogny. Do not turn right onto theGR® 76. It is a fairly steep but short climb.

(12) Just before the large pylon, you may be lucky enough to see paragliders taking off if conditions are right. Continue due west, passing under a power line.

(13) Before reaching the hamlet of Les Montots, turn right, cross the hamlet and, at the junction, keep right.

(14) Turn left to rejoin theGR®76and continue to the hamlet of Lys.

(15) At Lys, at the junction by the pretty little wash house, turn right onto the small road that leads back down to the starting point (S/E).

This route allowed us to explore the Côte Chalonnaise
As mentioned, the path is flooded at the start, so you have to walk along the riverbank
It is indeed not recommended in summer; there is very little shade and few places to picnic.
The ground is very muddy on the climb up the Monts de Brogny and, upon reaching the summit, the path is under construction near the relay masts. At this time of year, you need good shoes and walking poles as the paths are often very muddy.

Taken on a sunny but crisp autumn day, this route is perfect both for its many scenic viewpoints and the variety of terrain.

A pleasant walk, offering sweeping views...
Best avoided in hot weather, but perfectly feasible during the hunting season!
