Between Lys and the Canal

The town of Aire-sur-la-Lys is crossed by the Lys river. It is bordered by the Neuffossé Canal, which takes the name Canal d'Aire at La Bassée, from this town onwards. The Bassin des Quatre Faces (Four Faces Basin) once allowed boats to turn around and sail in the desired direction: towards the town, the Lys, the canal towards Saint-Omer or Béthune. It is a signposted trail in the Pays de Saint-Omer urban community.

Description of the walk

The departure point is at the Bassin des Quatre Faces: 54, Rue du Fort Gassion.

(S/E) From the starting sign, go straight ahead. After the bridge, turn right. Then continue on the paved road, leaving the grassy path on your right, until you reach a fork in the road in front of a house and a sign saying "Vitesse limitée à 45km/h" (speed limit 45km/h).

(1) Take the grassy path on the right. Follow the canal to the Pont de Thiennes bridge.

(2) Turn right and enter the hamlet of Pecqueur. After the wooden footbridge, turn left, then left again. At the crossroads, turn right, then immediately left. Leave the grassy path on your right. At the end, turn right. Continue to the second path on the left.

(3) Immediately turn right to follow the canal. Pass under a bridge and, at the intersection, turn right until the next fork, at 2 Rue de l'Ave Maria.

(4) Turn left. Leave the path on your left and the one on your right. After the bridge, turn right. At the fork, turn right, then immediately left until you reach a fork.

(5) Turn left (take the grassy path). At the end, continue right on the road to return to the starting point. (S/E)

Worth a visit

After your hike, it is worth taking a tour of the town. Aire-sur-la-Lys was a border town between Artois and Flanders. It was fortified, and traces of its military past remain. There are also some magnificent old buildings, including a bailiwick, town hall and religious buildings.
There are many sites to see in the Audomarois region. For more information, visit thePays de Saint-Omer Tourist Office and Convention Bureau website.
