Between Lias and Fontenilles

Circular route of just over 8 km starting from Fontenilles Stadium, featuring an ascent through the Bois des Magnolias, followed by a descent and then a climb back up the valley where the Ruisseau des Crabères flows, before returning to the stadium.
The owner of the Bois des Magnolias has closed the old path that climbed along the southern edge of the woods but, in return, has given us permission to use a new path that winds a little further into the woods.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Fontenilles Sports Ground next to the sports centre.

(S/E) Turn your back on the roundabout and take the path running between the two parts of the Espêche industrial estate.
Then follow the path on the left, skirting the outside of the Résidence des Magnolias, until you reach the small bridge crossing the ditch.

(1) Do not cross the bridge but turn right onto the path that climbs through the woods. Halfway up the slope, turn right onto the new path, which is much wider than the old one, and follow it to the edge of the woods. At the edge of the woods, the path continues to the left and follows the edge of the woods to the highest point of the walk (elevation 283). Superb view over the village of Lias and its hamlets, as well as the Fontenilles plain. A stop is recommended.

Head down to the left, continuing to follow the boundary path between the Gers and Haute-Garonne. Another viewpoint, this time over the village of Bonrepos-sur-Aussonnelle with the Pyrenees in the distance.
Continue downwards, ignoring the path on the left that leads down to Bonrepos, and carry on straight ahead.

(2) Take the path on the right which descends towards the Ruisseau d'Espinassou.

(3) Halfway down, take the path on the right which passes above a firewood seller and continue until you reach a road. Follow this road to exit the cul-de-sac and arrive on the road from Lias to Lagouargette.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left and head towards Lias until you reach the bottom of the descent.

(5) Before the climb, after the house and opposite the wood merchant, take the path on the right which climbs towards Les Arramous, passing over the Ruisseau des Crabères.

(6) The path leads onto a road: turn right and head down towards Fontenilles. The road is quiet, but keep to the right if there are more than two people; otherwise, keep to the left. Continue along the road until you reach the Gers/Haute-Garonne boundary, which is marked by a change in the road surface.

(7) Take the shaded path on the right, fording the Ruisseau des Crabères, and continue to the Route de Lias.

(8) Turn left and head down towards Fontenilles until you reach the entrance to the Espêche industrial estate.

(9) Just before this, take the shaded path on the right which runs along the outside of the first part of the industrial estate to the small stream at the end. Cross the stream using the carved steps and, at the top, turn left onto the path you took on the way there and head back to the stadium car park (S/E).

Well-signposted route. Not a very busy path. Sunday 27 November, under a beautiful sun. Magnificent views of the Pyrenees. A bit muddy at this time of year as it’s been raining quite a lot recently, but accessible to everyone with good walking shoes.
A few sections on the road that weren’t very interesting
I’ll do it again when the weather’s drier.

No trouble finding your way along the route with the IGN map provided in the description. A moment’s hesitation between points 1 and 2, where you come to a crossroads with three possible paths; the correct one is the middle one. The lack of visible signposting at this point is a bit of a nuisance.
A pleasant route, though the fords can be tricky in wet weather. The banks of the stream and the ditch are high and steep.
Thanks to the route planner.

Thank you for your kind comment
On Sunday 6 June, we are organising a charity walk in aid of the Fontenille-based charity Manon Hope, which supports the fight against leukaemia.
We’re offering three routes, including the one you took, with all three starting and finishing at the same place.
You may have noticed that the route has just been cleared of undergrowth and that planks have been laid to help cross the fords

A hike completed using a map and guidebook in 2 hours.
No difficulty with navigation as there are no signposts.
The shaded sections are very pleasant and the fords are easy to cross as there is little water.
Suitable for everyone looking for a peaceful walk.
We only met two people who were doing the route in the opposite direction.
Thanks to the person who created this route, just 20 minutes from my home.

A very pleasant walk that takes about two hours at a steady, moderate pace.
Ideal during this period of relaxed lockdown restrictions, as it prevents you from venturing further into the Pyrenees, from where you can enjoy a stunning panorama at the 283m peak, particularly of the Ariège Pyrenees as a whole.
After point 7, at the (safe) ford across the Ruisseau des Crabères, only high, waterproof boots will keep your feet dry.
I only used the map on my smartphone with the excellent GPX file provided.
I recommend this pleasant and peaceful walk, despite a few families out enjoying the sunshine and the extended 20km route.
Thanks to the person who provided this description and who has made me want to try the other walks in the area.
