Description of the route

Park in the car park next to Port de Gallician.

(S/E) Join the greenway that runs alongside the Canal du Rhône à Sète. Follow it to the right, heading towards the sea and Aigues-Mortes.

(1) Pass a signpost indicating the GR®42 on the right and continue straight on along the canal.

(2) Pass under the Pont des Tourradons and carry on straight ahead in the same direction. After a few kilometres, you’ll begin to make out the Tour de Constance in the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes.

Carry on along the greenway until you reach a small road (the D46 between Aigues-Mortes and Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze). Follow the road until you reach the Tour Carbonnière.

(3) Do take a short break and climb to the top of the tower for a magnificent panoramic view of the whole area.
Carry on along the D46 towards Saint-Laurent until you reach the bridge over the Vistre. There is a signpost just after the bridge on the right.

(4) Turn right and head upstream along the right bank of the Vistre via an old path through the vegetation. Continue in this direction until you reach the Pont de Chaberton.

(5) Cross the bridge and take a wide path on the other side of the Vistre which runs up the left bank. The landscape is more open and you may come across numerous bulls in the meadows on your right.

After a long straight stretch along the Vistre, the path turns to the right. At the next junction, turn left and join the D104.

(6) Take the road on the right which climbs up to a wine cellar.

(7) At the top of the hill, turn onto the track on the left and continue uphill, crossing the farm. Then follow the track as it winds through the vineyards across a small plateau, and descend slightly to Mas Tessier, where you’ll join a small road.

(8) Head down to the left, following the road, then just before a small bridge, turn right onto a path that runs alongside a drainage ditch and descends towards the Rhône-Sète Canal and the Port of Gallician. At the end of this path, a small footbridge takes you back to the greenway.

(1) Follow the greenway back up to the left, running alongside the canal, to return to Port de Gallician (S/E).

An interesting first part. Birds, horses, bulls and magnificent scenery. From the port of Galicien, the return journey was rather monotonous, as the route along the canal offered little variety in the scenery. Walk completed on foot

A lovely, short, shaded walk along the old Vistre. Do remember to walk along the meadows in the late afternoon or in the morning to see the bulls; otherwise, they’ll all be gathered under the trees 🌳
