Description of the walk

Car park at the Lacs de la Folie site in Contrexéville.
This route is almost entirely shared with routes nos. 20, 21 and 22, and, at the very start, with route no. 2.

(S/E) Facing the start sign, take the path that runs along the lake to the left. Let route no. 2 branch off to the right and continue until you reach a bend.

(1) Turn left to cross the small bridge and reach a Fork in the road.

(2) Turn right onto the small, straight track. Follow it, keeping to the left, up the wide, ascending trench (gas pipeline crossing). After marker no. 42, take the small ascending track on the right. Continuing on, enter the lane. Pass the tarmac road on your right to reach a crossroads.

(3) Turn left into the coniferous trees. At the end, turn right. Take the gravel forest track on the right. At the end of this, head straight down a small path which quickly veers to the left. Cross a wide path. Opposite, the track turns left after a small ditch, which it follows, before branching off to the right when it reaches a crossroads near the lake.

(4) Continue to the left and walk partly round the lake until you reach the crossroads.

(5) Let route no. 20 go straight ahead, and turn left. Turn right at a junction of forest tracks to reach a second fork.

(6) Leave the main track, passing Route No. 21 ahead on your left. Walk along the edge of the woodland. Cross the D13 and take the old road opposite.

(7) Turn left onto the grassy track leading to the entrance to the village of Outrancourt. Take the D13d on the right.
Turn right towards Rue de l’Abreuvoir, then rejoin the D13d on the right. Cross the bridge over the River Vair, pass route no. 22 on your right and turn left to leave the D13d. Enter the woods and turn right. Running alongside the dual carriageway, take a wide path on the left to reach the railway line.

(8) On the left, take a path running alongside the railway line. Turn right and cross a bridge over the railway line. Continue to the next bridge, passing under the dual carriageway. Climb the steep slope, turn left, then go straight on until you reach the access path to the Vittel Forest Park and its hairpin bend.

(9) Turn right. Go through the gate, turn left and, after the pond, turn right. Enter the woodland. Take a right-angle turn to the left, then another to the right. Once out of the woods, turn right and you’ll see a stony path on your left.

(10) Follow the path. Walk past the sports hall. Head straight down Rue Halichard and Avenue du Bois d’Hazau. Go straight ahead at the roundabout. Cross the main road and go round the Galerie Thermale on the right.

(11) Carry on straight ahead, go behind the casino and turn right to cross the entire spa park, cutting across Rue de la Victoire. Turn left as you leave the park, go under the railway bridge and follow the D164. At the traffic lights, cross the D13, turn right and then immediately left, taking the small Allée des Lacs and Rue de Châtillon. When you reach Route des Lacs on your right, carry on straight ahead and go under the motorway. You’ll come to a junction shortly after this.

(12) Turn right into the forest, then turn left to head downhill and join the lakeside path on the left. Continue straight on to return to the starting point by turning right onto the dividing embankment (S/E).

A walk taken on 13 July 2025, in bright sunshine, but with plenty of shade from the forest.
Very pleasant

Hike completed on 30 May 2025.
There were, of course, lots of people around the two lakes.
This route follows a signposted trail (marked in yellow) starting from the lakes’ car park.
Please note: you must avoid the GR 507 after Point 7 (Outrencourt exit), as following the GR 507 between points 7 and 8 (as I unfortunately did) takes you onto the road that runs alongside the D165 – a very busy and noisy road in a rather uninteresting setting – and in the full afternoon sun;
After Point 9, I’d recommend carrying on to the car park and the small roundabout (closed to vehicles) to take in the lovely Vittel park, with its children’s play area, and the potential for lovely weekends there... After the small roundabout, take the first forest path on the right, which leads to point 10… The rest of the route is the same… Except that you mustn’t forget to stop for a drink of Contrex at the free spring in the Galerie Thermale…

An easy route, with a third of the route on tarmac roads or tracks.
Quite a variety of scenery: 2 lakes, woodland and a small town (CONTREXEVILLE with its spa park).
Notes on visitor numbers: We did this walk in November in foggy weather.... It’s certain that in summer and in fine weather, we would have come across plenty of people.
