(S/E) Take the tarmac path (at the start) heading south, which climbs towards the forest, ignoring all paths branching off to the right, and reach the Croix Bétion.
(1) Shortly after the cross and the war memorial, take a small path that descends to the right and leads to the Odeigne Mill.
(2) Cross the Fays de la Folie stream via the road bridge near the Moulin d'Odeigne, then turn right towards the footbridge over the Aisne (signposted Moulin Crahay).
(3) Turn left. The path runs alongside the River Aisne on your left, at varying distances.
(4) At the Croix Joséphine Parmentier, turn left and head down towards the Fagne de la Goutte stream.
(5) Colonised by beavers, crossing the stream can be difficult during high water. The diversion marked on the map is not very visible on the ground and leads a little further up to a crossing over the stream via two tree trunks without a ramp. If the stream seems impassable at this point, turn back to the Croix Joséphine (4), go past this cross and take the first path on the left. This will lead you to another ford. You will then simply need to take the path on the left to rejoin the suggested route.
Continue more or less straight on, following the Red Diamond markings until you come close to, but do not reach, the Route Napoléon.
(6) Turn left onto a barely visible path that runs alongside the enclosure, about twenty metres before the road. Facing due east, the path runs straight until it reaches a crossroads.
(7) Turn left onto the wide path and cross the Fagne de la Goutte stream. This is the western end of this marshy area of the Plateau des Tailles. This path is the GR®14 Main Route, which enters the Bois d’Odeigne. Continue northwards to reach the banks of the Aisne.
(8) Turn left again just before the River Aisne (whose source lies a little further east in the Fagne de Pouhon), still on the GR®14. It turns 90° to the right to join the “Moulin d’Odeigne” path. Follow this to the right.
(9) At the ford across the Aisne, there are indeed a few large flat stones that allow you to cross the river itself without getting your feet wet... but in the event of flooding, the entire path leading to it is submerged. The route climbs slightly and opens out onto the countryside surrounding the village of Odeigne.
(10) Turn left and continue along Rue des Barons. Cross Odeigne on the west side, heading towards the church. Shortly after the church, take a path to the right which descends to the Ruisseau du Fays de la Folie, then climbs up the other side.
(11) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. The path narrows and becomes increasingly overgrown with the branches of the young trees around it. Continue, taking all the right-hand turnings.
(12) When you see the A-road, take the first path branching off to the left at the edge of the forest. Follow the route carefully to the war memorial, as there are no clearly recognisable landmarks on the ground.
(13) Take the path to the left.
(14) Just before the road, take the route of the old local tramway line that once linked Melreux to Comblain-au-Pont via Manhay. Cross the road and continue along this same old tramway line until you see some farm buildings on the right. Then turn right onto a farm track called ‘Voie Habotte’ which links the pastures, go through the gate and continue straight on to the Museum 44 (WWII – Battle of the Ardennes) in Grandménil.
(15) A German tank, a small square, a fountain, a monument, a bench. Take the Grande Rue on the left, then the track on the left, more or less straight on towards Oster. The small street, initially tarmac, quickly becomes a country lane.
(16) At the entrance to Oster, turn right and go round the village. Take the Chemin des Écoliers back to the starting point (S/E).
