Between the canal and the hillsides of the Frontonnais

Starting along the canal, the route then winds through the hillsides of the Fronton region, offering breathtaking views over the Garonne plain. This circular route is best suited to fit and active walkers, due to the elevation changes and gradients encountered.

Description of the route

Start from the car park at the Grenade-Castelnau sailing club, Chemin du Canal.

Signposting: Circular No. 20 – Red

(S/E) Take the greenway running alongside the canal on your left (passing the open-air café). Continue past the first lock for about 700 m until you reach a three-way junction.

(1) Turn right, go under the Hers canal bridge, and follow the greenway through the heart of the Eurocentre area until you reach No. 6, Impasse de la Nauze. Walk a few metres to the right.

(2) At the Stop sign, turn left onto Chemin de la Nauze and, at the end, turn right. Follow the road (D45D) along the cycle path. Atthe first roundabout, go straight ahead and, atthe second, turn right onto the D45, towards Villeneuve-lès-Bouloc. Atthe third, continue straight ahead, then takethe second left onto Chemin des Bordes.

(3) Follow this for about 2.1 km until you reach the next junction.

(4) At the Stop sign, continue straight ahead onto Chemin de Saint-Guilhem and follow it to the end, continuing straight on until you reach a crossroad.

(5) Turn left onto Chemin de Flotis, follow the road past Château Flotis, then cross the motorway bridge and, at the stop sign, turn right onto the D77.

(6) At the roundabout, take the2nd exit and follow the D77 towards Saint-Rustice; then, at the next three-way junction, turn right onto Chemin du Devès, follow it to the end, and arrive at No. 1358 (note: the junction is not very visible).

(7) Take the hairpin bend to the left onto Chemin de l’Escrimayre.

(8) At the three-way junction, keep right onto Chemin des Crêtes and continue to a four-way crossroads.

(9) Continue left and descend towards the village of Saint-Rustice, taking care (steep slope and hairpin bend), until you reach the four-way junction at the bottom of the street. At the Stop sign, turn right onto Rue du Puits Clos and continue to the junction with the D820.

(10) Cross with care – it is a very busy road – then take Chemin de Crespis opposite and cross the bridge over the railway line and the canal. Immediately after the bridge, turn left, head towards the canal and follow it on your left until you reach the car park of the Grenade-Castelnau sailing club (S/E).
