From the small lake to the Mont des Oiseaux viewpoint in Carqueiranne

This hike is inspired by the hike Le petit lac du Vallon et le Mont des Oiseaux in Carqueiranne, but stays on the Sabatière site, avoiding the descent via the Col du Serre.
We did it with Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. It is therefore completely accessible to all walkers, even beginners.

Description of the walk

The hike starts on the cycle path leading to Hyères, at the Résidence le Carthage. There are plenty of parking spaces available along the road. You can also use the bus network, line 39 serving the Carthage de Carqueiranne stop.

(S/E) Head towards Hyères on the cycle path and walk alongside a small residence. After 150 metres, just after the residence, turn left to walk alongside this residence in the large field, then continue straight on to the end of the field.

(1) Leave the field and take the path opposite, go around the small lake on your right, then continue along the path. Pass in front of a magnificent lime kiln restored by an association in Carqueiranne. Continue along the path.

(2) Ignore the sign indicating a climb to the lime kilns and continue straight ahead, walking alongside a holiday residence.

(3) At the tennis courts of the holiday residence, take the small path on the left, then turn left. Then climb until you reach two lime kilns, which are currently being restored.

(4) Take the path up to the right, then left at the next fork and continue along the path until you reach a cairn.

(5) Leave the track that branches off to the left and turn right onto the path for about 100 metres, towards a large burnt tree that is barely visible.

(6) At the fork, take the path that climbs to the left. The climb is a little steep but does not last long. Further on, descend gently towards a large meadow that climbs towards Mont des Oiseaux (barrier).

(7) Climb up to the right towards Mont des Oiseaux and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding hills.

(8) Climb up to the water tower to see the plain below, with a view of the airport and the beaches to the east of Hyères. Then descend via the small path running alongside the houses, turning immediately left towards the viewpoint.

(9) From the viewpoint, admire the tombolo of the Giens peninsula on the left and the Colle Noire massif. Then turn back and take the same route as on the way up to the barrier.

(7) Go around the barrier and take the gently sloping tarmac path on the right (west), passing in front of the water tower. You will arrive at the cairn you encountered on the way up.

(5) Turn left and follow the route back the way you came for about 100 metres until you reach the fork you passed on the way up.

(6) This time, leave the path that climbs uphill and stay on the path opposite, which slopes gently downhill until you see some houses.

(10) Turn right at the barrier and descend gently to the two lime kilns.

(4) Turn left to descend and rejoin the path you followed at the start of the hike.

(2) Turn right and follow the route in reverse until you reach the start of the cycle path. At the end, you can cross the meadow by the small lake before reaching the field and crossing it (S/E).

A lovely walk with stunning views right from the start, especially of this magnificent lake at the end of April.
Easy? Not really… There are a few climbs that take a bit of breath, but the scenery along the way is definitely worth the effort!

A very beautiful walk... but a bit tough on the climb between points 6 and 7: steep and rocky, so slippery. It deserves an "intermediate" rating, as indicated in other reviews.
Magnificent views and interesting diversity along the hike: lake, forest, forest road, housing estate, etc. You won't get bored!
At the start, we had to turn back because the meadow was closed and occupied by sheep guarded by a Patou dog. So we took the suggested route for the return journey on the way there.

A lovely walk in fine weather, with fairly strong winds felt in the exposed section at the end of the route.
Magnificent views of the sea and islands.
Head to the unmarked viewpoint for a glimpse of Hyères
I recommend it.

GPS is essential because the directions are often wrong (for example, turning right when you should be turning left, and this happens several times). The GPS track isn't always accurate either, but it helps you find your way. We had to climb over (or crawl under) numerous tree trunks blocking the path, and there are two really steep hills, which justify classifying this hike as moderate.
Apart from that, there are some very beautiful views 🙂

A lovely, slightly steep trail.
Beautiful views and sheltered from the mistral wind.
We were pleasantly surprised.

I would say that the level is average rather than easy.

Nice walk. We parked in the casino car park (Sunday afternoon, not many people around).
We followed the very handy pink markings and, with the help of the description, we found our way easily.
The views of the peninsula and the tombolo are sublime. There are also some superb villas to feast your eyes on.
The app is not so good. On my phone, the app closes (crashes). The zoom is constantly cancelled and the app returns to the general map. I had to reload the map several times and it's not easy to reload it from the maps already downloaded. Is it a lack of familiarity or bugs?
The easy level seems about right to me, even if the final climb to the top of Mont des Oiseaux is a little more challenging, especially given the condition of the path, which is very stony. Most of the walk is through forest.

A beautiful hike with stunning views.
However, the elevation gain is significant, so it would be better classified as intermediate rather than easy. Even so, there are no major difficulties.
The car park indicated is private, but you can easily park on the other side of the roundabout.
As for the route, the map on the app is fine. I'm not sure the description is sufficient.
In any case, thank you for this wonderful discovery! Give it a go: you won't be disappointed and you'll be amazed!
I did it with a dog and, apart from the first few hundred metres, it's all through pine forest or, at the end, through a deserted housing estate, so you can take your dog with you without any problems.
