Hyères - Collobrières

The Grande Traversée des Maures, or "Montem Maurum" as it was described in the Middle Ages, has never been attempted. This "diagonal route through the Maures" takes us through magnificent Provençal landscapes. A varied, wild vegetation and exceptional views punctuate this route. This adventure begins in Hyères (former Templar commandery) and ends in Collobrières (capital of the Maures) during the first stage.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this crossing is in the castle car park, north of the town.

(S) Take the DFCI C40 "Les Maurettes" track, which climbs north-east. Reach the top of the hill with a view of the town.

(1) Continue along the track. You will reach a crossroads at the end of Chemin des Hauts de Hyères.

(2) Follow the track that climbs opposite. Further on, leave the access to the housing estate on your right and continue to the crossroads at the water tower.

(3) Stay on the cement track which descends and winds its way past the barracks. Go through the barrier at the end of the track and you will come out onto the tarmac road known as Chemin du Plan du Pont.

(4) Cross the road and take the cycle path on the left for about 100 metres. Turn right onto a path running alongside the barracks fence and a housing estate on the left.

(5) Turn right, continuing to follow the fence and walking alongside the Gapeau on your left. Continue to the N559 (Route de Nice).

(6) Turn left onto the La Première Division de la France Libre bridge and carefully go around the roundabout on the left (no protected crossing). Then turn left onto a path heading northeast, following the greenhouses on the left and a pine hedge on the right. Join a tarmac road.

(7) Turn left and then negotiate the right-hand bend, staying on the road. Follow this road for a long time until you reach the crossroads marking the start of the Revéou DFCI track.

(8) Continue along the road on the right, keep right at the junction about 200 m further on and continue to a crossroads.

(9) Keep to the left and continue straight ahead until you reach the junction with the Route de Collobrières (D88).

(10) Cross carefully, then turn right to cross a bridge and a crossroads. After the crossroads, take the grassy path opposite that runs alongside the road and continue for about 200 metres.

(11) Turn left onto the DFCI 6351 track from Notre-Dame des Maures towards the Gauttobry dolmen. Pass the entrance to a house on the left and you will immediately reach a three-way junction.

(12) Keep right on the track and you will reach a fork at a cistern.

(13) Leave the track that descends to the right, continue on the main track, which is slightly sloping, and pass close to the dolmen. You will reach a crossroads of tracks and paths.

(14) Continue left on the track, leaving the LMS 12 fire cistern on your right. You will reach another crossroads.

(15) Leave the main track and take the path on the right marked with yellow signs.

(16) Leave the path that continues to the left and take the path opposite, which descends to join the Vallon de Tamay. Cross the ford, then take the track on the right for about a hundred metres.

(17) At the crossroads, turn left onto the track that climbs (DFCI B 35, l'Anguille de Valcros) while skirting the Domaine de Tamary. Keep right at the crossroads a good hundred metres further on and join the crossroads with the Valcros track (cistern).

(18) Turn left and continue to the next junction.

(19) Turn left again, staying on the Valcros track, and you will reach a six-way crossroads at a place called Mirabélet.

(20) Continue north-east on the main track, leaving the green cistern on your right. You will reach a three-way junction.

(21) Turn right, keep left at the fork and continue to a track junction.

(22) Continue right on the main track called B 35 to reach the Col de Babaou.

(23) Cross the D41 tarmac road with caution and continue on the track that climbs towards the Peigros farm: DFCI B 251 Piste Laquina. Go around the Sommet de Pertuade, keep right at the junction and continue to a crossroads about 150 m further on.

(24) Take the Malière track opposite, which descends slightly to reach the Peigros farm.

(25) Continue along the gently sloping track, which makes two long bends before reaching its lowest point opposite the Malière stream.

(26) Turn right onto the tarmac road for 200 m until you reach a bridge. Cross the bridge and take the path on the left, which climbs diagonally and is marked with red signs.

(27) At the three-way junction, continue left downhill and continue to follow the red markings. You will reach a crossroads.

(28) Turn right onto the track that climbs steeply. Pass the cemetery on your left and continue straight ahead. Keep to the right at the small car park to pass between the Notre-Dame des Victoires church and the primary school.

(29) Turn left onto Rue de la République, continue right onto Rue Gambetta to reach the old Collobrières bridge and the finish (E).
