Description of the walk

From Vallouise, take the D994E towards Ailefroide and then Pré de Madame Carle. Park in the car park near the refuge chalet. Parking fee: £2.

(S/E) From the Pré de Madame Carle refuge chalet, take the path to the north-west. This climbs gently through a forest of larch trees before reaching an area of moraines. After crossing the Torrent de la Momie and then the Glacier Noir, the path climbs up through the scree and joins a crossroads of trails.

(1) At the sign, leave the Glacier Noir on your left and take the Glacier Blanc on your right.
Carved into the mountainside, the trail climbs up a series of steps and, after passing a few ledges, descends to cross the Torrent du Glacier Blanc on a footbridge. A cable-assisted passage allows you to safely cross the rocky escarpments and leads to a flat area with a sign inviting you to visit the old Tuckett Refuge.

(2) At the sign, take the path on the right, which quickly leads to the refuge. After a contemplative break, return to the previous crossroads.

(2) Cross the rocky plateau to the north, pass the small Lac Tuckett and then reach the base of the promontory of the Refuge du Glacier Blanc. A new cable-assisted passage climbs up the side of the wall and easily reaches the refuge.

(3) Take the Refuge des Écrins trail north for about 100 metres.

(4) Turn 90° right towards the east. Follow the cairns. Cross a grassy area, then climb up the boulders and moraines on a small path marked by a few cairns.

(5) Reach a final flat area at the foot of the Jean Gauthier Glacier, which has completely melted.

Return in the same direction to your parking spot (S/E).

Practical information

I have made a video of the route showing the various points of interest.
360° panorama from the Jean Gauthier viewpoint with the names of the Écrins peaks.

I should point out that the difficulty level here is medium to high.

You will be hiking in the heart of the Écrins National Park.

The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a rare natural, cultural and landscape heritage. Far too crowded with a wide variety of users: mountaineers, hikers, walkers, trail runners... everyone jostles each other as best they can, but it's a bit tiresome and the atmosphere isn't great. The route leads to a glacier that has disappeared and isn't very interesting, whereas it's more fun to go to the foot of the white glacier, which hasn't disappeared yet. Beautiful view from the refuge.

I don't know if I'm "Bernard"
But I imagine I am!

So it was a mistake to give my opinion, I'll refrain from doing so in future.
The person who died slipped just before reaching the refuge. Handrail or not, we can clarify that

The idea of this app, as I understand it, is to give your opinion (even if it's negative) so that other people can form their own opinion.
I'm giving mine, after doing it with my children.
There are some risky behaviours on this hiking trail, which is far too busy in narrow passages and/or where there are handrails.
There are some sections that can be tricky if you're afraid of heights or have a fear of heights. And I think it's important to point that out!

I look forward to reading your thoughts, because does a well-travelled route automatically mean it's ultra-safe?
We disagree on this point.

In response to the previous comment, the accident did not occur on a handrail. Bernard, please check your information.
This trail remains a hiking trail with a few sections featuring cables/handrails. It is used by many people every day.
Of course, appropriate hiking equipment is required.

This route is much too busy...
The narrow paths along the cliffside make it difficult to pass other hikers, which I found a bit dangerous.

We did this hike as a group of four, with my two daughters aged 8 and 10. They are used to walking.
Our impression of this hike is: difficult! For the four of us.
There are lots of rocks to climb. The final climb to the refuge, with a handrail, is quite tough. (A man from Brussels died this week after falling on this section.
It's not so much the distance that makes it difficult, as it's very short to reach this magnificent setting, but the technical nature and the via ferrata aspect that make it challenging. I think this is important information to bear in mind
Especially when walking with young children.

There wasn't much space once we reached the refuge, so we decided to head back down near the Tuckett refuge to stop for lunch.
Apart from that, we were very lucky to have access to such a beautiful glacier.

The setting is magnificent... but there are too many people, some of whom behave in a way that borders on rudeness: it no longer feels like you're in the mountains.

There are other hikes in the area that are just as beautiful and without the tourist crowds.

A beautiful, fairly popular hike, where the marmots are not very shy! Good food at the refuge and beautiful scenery...

Hike completed in August in very hot weather to the Refuge du Glacier Blanc.
The valley faces south and has no shade, so it is necessary to set off early in the summer.
The views from the refuge terrace are superb: Pelvoux, the front of the Glacier Blanc (now around 2,700 metres high), Pointe de la Sagne, the peaks overlooking the Col de Monétier (Agneaux) and the Gyr valley to the south.
Very popular with mountaineers, of course, and hikers on both the ascent and descent.
No problems on the secured sections (too secure?).
A must-see in the valley.

We set off early in the morning, in the cool air with the chamois, and were greeted at the free car park.
The climb is easy. The path is very well maintained. Marmots above the refuge and beautiful views of the white glacier and Pelvoux. You can see the Ecrins refuge (with binoculars).
There were lots of people on the way down: equipped hikers heading for the refuges and casual tourists who didn't climb very high. But there were few people at the Jean Gauthier glacier.
"Postcard photo" at the crossing over the water at the old refuge.

Hike to the Glacier Blanc refuge, mid-August 2024, with two children aged 5 and 8.
Departure at 9:30 a.m. from the car park. It was half full. The big rush tends to happen at 10 a.m.
There are people all along the route, but it's not too bad because hikers spread out as they climb and everyone is in a good mood. So the crowds aren't a problem. Surprisingly, it's quite quiet at the refuge.
As for the climb itself, it's not particularly difficult. It's an intermediate level hike. The slope is very steady, not too strenuous except perhaps at the end, where there are a few more challenging rocky sections. Our children didn't have any particular difficulties (they are experienced walkers, though). It took us 2 hours and 15 minutes to cover the 650 metres of elevation gain to the refuge. There is a fresh spring where you can fill your water bottles and, of course, enjoy a nice cold beer or something to eat. Allow the same amount of time for the descent.
If you're worried about the climb, you can easily stop before you get there. Either at the footbridge over the torrent, after a 400-metre climb, or at the edge of the water in the grassy plain below the refuge, after a 550-metre climb. The view of the glacier and the peaks is already perfect, so you'll be well rewarded.
In any case, the landscape is absolutely magnificent from start to finish. This is an unmissable hike that will leave you with wonderful memories and beautiful images in your mind.

A magnificent hike to the refuge, much more difficult after that.
We climbed 150 metres above the white glacier to get a better view.
Very few tracks to follow, just the cairns.
Lots of people, even in June.

I completed the hike but continued on to the white glacier: you have to keep walking along the trail above the refuge towards the white glacier...
and there, what a reward: a view of the entire glacier, the Barre des Écrins, the Dôme des Écrins... and I'm forgetting some.
A magnificent hike that is not to be missed (all the way to the glacier)
