Description of the walk

Access: When you arrive in Douarnenez, follow the signs for Port Rhu. Walk along the estuary and park on the right in the small car park after the footbridge, just before the MJC. There are also plenty of parking spaces along the quays.

(S/E) Cross the boulevard, take the Jean Marin footbridge opposite to cross the floating dock, then turn left to walk along the dock. Continue south, passing a staircase on your right, until you reach another staircase that leads up to the Grand Pont.

(1) Cross this bridge, which offers a view of the whole of Port Rhu, with the ria to the right and Tristan Island to the left. Before the roundabout at the end of the bridge, turn right onto Rue Durest Le Bris, which slopes downwards and continues onto Rue de l'Abattoir. At the stop sign, cross Quai du Port Rhu and take the pavement heading north-west. Pass under the bridge you crossed earlier and follow the quays.

(2) Turn right at Place de L'Enfer, where you will find the Boat Museum and the Georges Perros Media Library. Walk up Rue du Port Rhu and go around the Saint-Michel Chapel on your left. Turn left onto Rue du Cherche Midi, walk past a small car park and you will come to a staircase. Take these stairs to return to Quai Du Port Rhu. Continue right along the esplanade running alongside the port and continue to the departure footbridge.

(3) Turn right onto Rue Daniel Le Flanchec and follow this uphill street, which bends to the left and ends at Rue Saint Michel, which you follow to the left. At the intersection, turn right and go around the Sacré Cœur Church. You will come to Rue des Baigneurs, which you follow to the right, then turn left into Rue Henri Barbusse, which will take you to Rue du Rosmeur, overlooking the old port of the same name.

(4) On the left is a pink building: this is the former sailors' shelter, which now houses Éditions du Chasse-Marée. Follow Rue du Rosmeur to the right and take the first staircase on the right to reach Place du Sémaphore. Cross the square and follow Rue du Sémaphore and its passageway to Rue Boudoulec, which you descend to the left. Turn right at the junction of Rue du Rosmeur and right again into Rue de la Marine.

(5) Turn left onto Rue du Port, then shortly afterwards, turn right onto Rue Obscure, which leads to Rue du Couedic, which you descend on the left. Turn right onto Rue Grivart, then right into the second alley, Venelle des Alcyons, which leads to Rue Pierre Hervé Julien, which you follow to the left.

(6) Opposite the entrance to the Chapelle Sainte-Hélène, turn right twice, then left to reach Place des Halles via Rue Émile Zola. Go up Rue Voltaire on the left to Place Gabriel Péri, where the Bolomig stands.

(7) Go around the square and down Rue Anatole France, then right onto Rue Eugène Kerivel and almost immediately left onto Rue Guy Moquet. Pass by the side of the Chapelle Saint-Hélène and continue on to turn right onto Rue Antoine Cariou.
Turn right onto Rue des Plomarc'h, then left onto Rue Monte au Ciel and continue until you reach Rue Jean Jaurès, which you follow for about ten metres to the left.

(8) Turn left onto Rue du Carrefour and follow it to reach the seafront, leaving the Plomarc'h site on your right. At the junction with Rue des Plomarc'h, turn left and then right onto Rue des Marsouins. Follow it to the end to reach Rue Anatole France, which you follow down to the Port of Rosmeur.

(9) Follow the quay westwards and, at the end, turn right to reach the end of the car park (viewpoint over the entrance to the fishing port and the colourful houses overlooking the Port of Rosmeur). Turn around, walk along the fish market on your right, then turn right to reach the end of the fishing port.

Turn left, then left again at the Flimiou Jetty. Follow the esplanade overlooking the seafront westwards, passing Pors Cad Beach and then Les Dames Beach. Continue along Boulevard Camille Reaud (on your right, view of Tristan Island) and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

This route partly follows a route set up by the tourist office called "The Sardine Trail". It is marked on the ground by nails representing a sardine.
The route is accessible in ordinary walking shoes. Minor difficulty: several sections with steps.

Slight variation: on Sundays, it is possible to walk along the fishing port and see the boats at the quayside.

To make it easier to follow the description, it is a good idea to ask for a map of Douarnenez at the Tourist Office.

Worth a visit

The Bolomig: An iconic figure in Douarnenez,
This Egyptian-style statuette was created in 1861 and placed on a fountain in this square. It quickly became the symbol of Douarnenez, honoured but also disguised during festivities.

This route allowed us to discover the beautiful town of Douardenez, with its ports, narrow streets, church and rural areas. A pleasant surprise.

Avoid this very disappointing city walk. The first part up to point 3 is nice, but the rest of the route is depressing, with little to see until point 8.
