In Tréboul, Douarnenez's water sports centre.

This walk offers two very different faces. The first part of the walk takes you through the lesser-known old town of Tréboul, along small streets, alleys and passageways often reserved for pedestrians.
The second part, from the beautiful Plage des Sables Blancs, follows the coastal path overlooking the bay to the marina and its various activities.

Description of the walk

Access: When you arrive in Douarnenez, follow signs for Port Rhu. Drive along the estuary and park on the right in the small car park after the footbridge, just after the MJC. There are also plenty of parking spaces along the quays.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the footpath towards the MJC. On your left, you will see a modern war memorial with a moving epitaph. Cross the boulevard at the pedestrian crossing. Take the Jean Marin footbridge opposite to cross the dry dock.

No signposts

At the end, turn left onto the dirt path that runs alongside Port Rhu, the museum port, and continue to the end of the path.

(1) Opposite the house numbered 40, take a sharp right turn onto the uphill street. Ignore a one-way street on the left, turn left with the street and then right onto Rue Anne de Bretagne. At the stop sign, turn right onto the street that leads straight to the Kermabon buildings.

(2) At the sign for "Port de plaisance" (marina), turn left into Rue de Cornouaille. At the bottom of this street, opposite a grassy triangle, turn right into a passageway (Passage de Cornouaille) which winds its way between the houses and leads to a street that descends to the right towards the marina. Opposite the marina, turn left to cross the large car park where a market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Cross the street at the pedestrian crossing and head towards the post office building.

(3) At this building on your left, ignore the stairs opposite and turn right into Passage de la Poste, which climbs steadily. Cross the street and continue straight ahead into Venelle de Poulmerrien, which is only about 1 metre wide in places. You will come to a small square from where you can see the parish church of Tréboul.
Turn left onto Rue du Maréchal Foch and walk uphill for about 100 metres.

Take thefirst street on the right and immediately turn right again into Rue du Rulaz, which climbs towards the cemetery. Pass the Stereden holiday centre on your right and come out opposite the marine cemetery, which offers a beautiful view of the bottom of Douarnenez Bay. Walk up alongside the cemetery and turn left at the top.

(4) Turn right into Passage Saint-Jean, marked as a dead end on the map, and at the end turn left into the street. After about 100 metres, turn right into Rue Antoine Nau, which leads to the stadium. Walk along the grassy area on the right-hand side of the stadium and turn right at the street you reach.

At the crossroads, turn right, signposted Impasse des Tritons, but leave this cul-de-sac on your right and continue straight ahead until you reach a small square with a calvary. Turn left into Passage des Sirènes with its pretty little houses. Turn left twice and continue along Impasse Ar Goarem Vihan (signposted at ground level near the rubbish bins).

(5) Go straight downhill with greenhouses on your left, then turn along the tennis courts. Take Rue des Peupliers, which runs alongside a car park (Hôtel Première Classe on your right), then turn left into Rue des Professeurs Curie, which leads to Plage des Sables Blancs.

(6) Turn right to follow the concrete path that runs along the beach or walk along the beach itself, depending on the tide. Pass by the balneotherapy centre, then climb up to the grassy esplanade via the steps or the concrete platform (viewpoint over the beach and Îlot le Coulinec). Continue along the coastal path overlooking the sea.

(7) Go around the Chapelle Saint-Jean chapel on the left (note the bust of Max Jacob with an explanatory plaque on the right) and descend above Plage Saint-Jean beach. Climb back up, passing below the marine cemetery, and arrive opposite Pointe de Biron with its breakwater and lighthouse, which marks the entrance to the port of Tréboul. Continue along the small road, which offers a beautiful view of Tristan Island, part of the Conservatoire du Littoral.

Pass the new nautical centre and note the major work being done to secure the cliff above it. Pass the marina harbour master's office and walk along the Quai de L'Yser, then the Quai de François Bonizec and Quai de Marie-Agnès Péron, where there are various workshops related to yachting. Continue along the path overlooking the sea, climb a wooden ramp and arrive at the footbridge.

Cross it and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the car park on Boulevard Camille Réau (S/E).

A very pleasant walk that takes you away from the busier streets of Tréboul. We missed one or two landmarks, but it didn't matter as it's not a GR trail and you can always find your way back.
Thank you for this route!

A lovely walk through the narrow streets and alleys of Tréboul, then along the coastal path (much busier).
