Coastal path via the beaches of Trezmalaouen and Kervel

Framed by the cliffs of Cap-Sizun to the south and the Crozon Peninsula to the north, Douarnenez Bay is a sheltered spot, well known to ships when heavy weather is forecast.
TheGR®® runs along the various beaches at the bottom of the bay and offers a beautiful view of Douarnenez and its fishing port.

NB: a new section was inaugurated in March 2024 to avoid the 20% incline at the start. The GR® markings do not currently take this into account, but it will soon become the official route.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the edge of the D7 on the opposite side to Ris Beach (Ry on the map).

(S/E) Cross the road carefully at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the right for a few dozen metres along the footpath.

(1) Go up to the left onto the new section, cross a wooden footbridge and continue along the wide path through an area of heathland. Walk along the fence overlooking the cliff (beautiful view of Ris Beach and Douarnenez). Continue along this path until you reach a staircase that connects to the old route.

GR® 34 marked in white and red

(2) Turn left and follow the coastal path overlooking the bottom of Douarnenez Bay towards Trezmalaouen Beach, walking alongside a maritime pine forest.

(3) Near a bench, leave the path on your right, which will be the return route, and continue in the same direction.

 (4) Cross a stream, turn left and continue straight ahead.

(5) As you approach the beach, go down a wooden staircase, pass two picnic tables and then go down another wooden staircase to arrive at a car park shortly afterwards. Cross the car park, go around a small white house and continue along the path. Continue along a small uphill road and, at the next bend, turn left onto a staircase leading down to the beach (property opposite). Continue to the right, leave the beach using a small footbridge to cross a stream and turn right onto the path facing the Beg ar Gareg hill topped with a cross.

(6) Turn left onto the path that climbs this hill. At the top, there is a viewpoint over the entrance to Douarnenez Bay, framed by Cap Sizun on the left and the Crozon Peninsula on the right. Continue along the path downhill, passing a ruin decorated with a fish design, and cross a series of car parks with picnic tables. Ignore a road on the right and arrive at the Kervel car park.

(7) To the left of a bar, climb the Route des Frégates then turn left to rejoin the coastal path overlooking Douarnenez Bay. Pass Pointe de Beg ar Véchen and continue to the junction with aPR®® (signpost).

YellowPR®® markings

(8) At the signpost marked "route de l'anse", leave the coastal path by turning right onto a path that climbs between hedges, then joins a field boundary and leads to a road.

No markings

(9) Turn right, pass Kergoasguen and continue to the junction with a cross road (campsite on your left).

(10) At the stop sign, cross carefully and take the secure pedestrian/cycle path on the right which descends to the village of Kervel.

(7) At the beach car park, there are two options:
- retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there, passing by the hill of Beg ar Gareg and returning to the first car park you came to on the way there (GR®®34).
- Descend to Kervel Beach, follow it to the left, go around Beg ar Gareg and continue along Trezmalaouen Beach to the car park (marked route): check the tide levels (see Practical Information).

(5) At the car park, there are three options:
- Return via the coastal path you took on the way there (longer and more tiring route).
- take the small road that goes uphill and arrives at a T-junction (marked route and route described).
- take a mixed route combining the small road and the coastal path (see Practical Information).

(11) Turn right onto a small road with a 30 km/h speed limit which descends to a stream and then climbs back up towards a pine forest. From the road, there are beautiful views of Dournenez Bay. Ignore the road on the left and continue straight ahead (signposted Hent Coat Pin).

(12) Turn right at the pine forest and descend onto the coastal path

(3) Turn left and, following the same route as on the way out, follow the coastal path, join the D7 and crosscarefully to return to the car park (S/E).

A route where we never lose sight of the magnificent bay.
We extended the walk a little at point 8 and also enjoyed a lovely view towards Sainte-Anne-la-Palud. We rejoined the marked path after this short detour.
Thank you for this walk.

We walked back along the shore, right by the water's edge; it was a lovely walk.

Hello,

Your review does not correspond to the hike: Coastal path via the beaches of Trezmalaouen and Kervel

You were at Pointe du Raz.
"So we parked on the side of the road at Baie des Trépassés, took the GR34 trail at the beach towards Pointe du Raz, and returned by the same route."

Kind regards

We couldn't find the picnic area. The description no longer matches the new signs at the entrance to the town. So we parked on the side of the road at Baie des Trépassés. We took the GR34 coastal path from the beach towards Pointe du Raz and returned by the same route. It's very beautiful and easy to follow, but sometimes a little dangerous and very busy.

Very beautiful route, breathtaking views (in good weather...)
We set off from the car park below the TREZMALAOUEN campsite, which is ideal for picnics.
Very few cars on the road sections, at least at this time of year.

Thank you very much for yesterday's route in such beautiful weather. There were lots of people around Kervel. We had a little trouble getting past the Beg Ar Véchen headland, but without really knowing how, we still managed to find the path through the hedges and get back to the road. The return journey was a bit unclear, so at the end of Trezmalaouen beach we decided to take the same route back as we did on the way there. But it was really great. Thank you very much.
