Discover Aigues-Mortes, a city that comes alive with every step you take

In the heart of the Camargue, Aigues-Mortes unfurls its ramparts like an open book on history. Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, go to Avenue Frédéric Mistral, 30220 in Aigues-Mortes. Park in car park P6.

(S/E) Head west on Avenue Frédéric Mistral, then turn left at the end of the avenue to continue on Avenue de la Tour de Constance. You will arrive in front of the medieval city of Aigues-Mortes. Enter the city through the Porte de la Gardette, then turn left to pass in front of the fountain. Continue along Rue Émile Zola, then turn right onto Rue Alsace-Lorraine. Walk behind the church and, at the rear of the town hall, turn right. You will arrive at Place Saint-Louis, in front of the town hall and the tourist office.

(1) After exploring the square and admiring the statue of Saint Louis, take Grande Rue Jean Jaurès, passing in front of the Church of Notre-Dame des Sablons. At the end of the street, turn left towards the Porte de la Gardette, then follow the ramparts. Continue to the stone porch with the Tower of Constance in the background. (Here, you can purchase tickets for €12 to visit the ramparts via the elevated walkway connecting the watchtowers and ramparts.)

(2) Continue along the ramparts, pass through the Porte des Remblais, then turn left at the base of the Tour des Bourguignons. On the inner boulevard, pass the Porte de l'Organeau, the Porte des Galions, the Porte de la Marine and the Porte de l'Arsenal, before reaching the base of the Tour de la Poudrière.

(3) Continue northeast to reach the Queen's Gate. (Here, you can leave the ramparts and take Chemin Bas de Peccai to discover, 200 metres further on, the last remaining ice house dating from the 17th century). After the Queen's Gate, turn left onto Rue Paul Bert and continue to the Chapel of the Brotherhood of the Grey Penitents.

(4) Continue straight ahead, crossing the charming arcaded square adjacent to Rue Paul Bert, then continue straight ahead on Rue Pasteur. Turn right at the first intersection and continue to the Chapel of the White Penitents, located to the right of the intersection with Rue de la République.

(5) Continue south-east on Rue de la République. Continuing in this direction, you will arrive at the foot of the ramparts, in front of the Porte des Cordeliers. Turn left. Walking along the ramparts, pass by the foot of the Tour de Villeneuve, followed by the Tour de la Mèche. Pass in front of the Porte Saint-Antoine, then the Tour du Sel, before arriving in front of the Porte de la Gardette. Leave the medieval city and turn left to reach the Tour de Constance. Cross the D979 carefully and turn right, following the quayside of the Canal du Rhône. Pass in front of the statue of Bacchus as a child. Continue along the quay and the cruise boats. Opposite Avenue de la Liberté, cross carefully to continue eastwards and return to car park P6 on Avenue Frédéric Mistral (S/E).
