Discover La Grande-Motte

A walk in white, green and blue: the white of the beautiful buildings designed by architect Jean Balladur, the green of the small but numerous parks criss-crossed by a multitude of pedestrian walkways, and, of course, the blue of the sea.
If I were God, I would be wary of architects! They are the subversive instruments of the human race's secret project: to rebuild Paradise Lost.
Jean Balladur

Description of the walk

Park on the east side of the town, in the Ponant car park (free), on the right of the D255/D62E1, just after the Pont des Abimes bridge when arriving from Le Grau-du-Roi.

(S/E) Head towards the bridge and cross the D62E1 on the pedestrian crossing at the entrance to the bridge. Follow the path opposite and immediately turn right onto the concrete path. When you reach a T-junction with a sign for "Quartier Point Zéro", follow the Allée du Levant on the left. At the end, turn right, go through the red barriers and continue along the lane opposite. At the T-junction, turn left onto Allée de la Plage, take the first right onto Rue de la Plage, then the first lane on the left to arrive at Parc du Point Zéro.

(1) Follow the curved path on the right, then turn sharply right in front of the building (Le Saint-Clair with hourglass motifs on the façade) and continue straight ahead until you reach the T-junction with Allée du Vaccarès. Continue along the pedestrian path opposite. You will come to a street in front of the Antinéa II building. Turn left and continue to the roundabout.

(2) Keep right onto Avenue de Melgueil, continue for about 60 metres and turn left onto Place du Marché, passing through the red barriers. Take the first alley on the right and arrive at the town hall and church square and head towards the church (a must-see if it is open) by crossing the square.

(3) Pass between Saint-Augustin Church and the town hall and continue straight ahead along the lane. Further on, cross Avenue Jean Bène and continue opposite, to the right of the post office. Turn right and walk a few steps into the park (a beautiful mulberry tree). Return to the street, Allée des Parcs, cross it to walk behind the hotel and continue straight ahead to reach Avenue de Montpellier at the Palais des Congrès. Turn left and head for the marina.

(4) Turn right and walk along the harbour via Avenue Robert Fages, then continue straight ahead on the same avenue until you reach a roundabout.

(5) Turn right onto Rue des Voiliers, follow this street until the intersection with Rue du Couchant and turn left onto this street. After the second left turn, follow an alley on the right and you will arrive at Allée du Maréchal Juin. Turn right to arrive immediately at Place des Anciens d'Indochine.

(6) Continue in the same direction to reach a large, greener square, Place de l'Homme (signposted Place de l'Homme Place du Cosmos). Turn left onto a pedestrian path and, just before reaching Avenue Plein Soleil and the red barriers, turn left onto a path.

(7) At the intersection with Allée des Sables, turn right to reach Avenue Plein Soleil and follow it to the left. At the crossroads with Rue des Navigateurs on the left and Allée des Phéniciens on the right, continue straight ahead for about 50 metres, then turn left onto a green alleyway, through a passage between shops. At the first intersection of alleys, turn right, cross the street, and continue straight ahead to reach a park. Head straight towards a sign for Passerelle Lampadophore.

(8) Take this footbridge to cross to the other side of Avenue du Mérachal de Lattre de Tassigny. Continue straight ahead for about 50 metres, then turn left to find the entrance to the cemetery. Enter to discover more pyramids. Retrace your steps to the Passerelle Lampadophore sign.

(8) Turn right onto the park path, ignore the first footbridge over a stream on the right and take the next one. Continue straight ahead and, at the intersection, follow the path on the left. Go around the Parking des Dunes car park on the right, then follow the path from the car park to the beach, crossing the Promenade des Dunes.

(9) Follow the beach with the sea on your right (towards the east) to return to the marina.

(10) Facing the harbour, turn left and take the hairpin bend on Esplanade Jean Baumel to go around the shipyard. You will arrive at the roundabout you passed on the way there.

(5) Turn right onto Avenue Robert Fages. In front of the restaurant, turn right to reach Quai Éric Tabarly and continue along the harbour.

(4) At the corner, turn right onto Quai Georges Pompidou. Pass to the right of the Mercure Hotel and arrive at Quai Paul Harris. Turn left. Do not turn right onto Quai Charles de Gaulle, but continue straight ahead on the alleyway to arrive at Avenue Pierre Racine.

(11) At the intersection near the Le Chéops building, continue straight ahead to reach the seafront (photo exhibition "Avant 1974" in 2023). Turn right towards the Vent Debout monument on Promenade Jacques Chirac and continue to the end of the seawall.

(12) Retrace your steps to the crossroads at the Le Chéops building.

(11) Turn right onto Rue Frédéric Mistral, follow it around a left-hand bend then a right-hand bend to reach a roundabout you passed on the way there.

(2) Turn right onto Avenue de l'Europe, continue straight ahead until you reach the seafront and go down to the beach.

(13) Walk along the beach, with the sea on your right, until you reach the Vidourle sea wall.

(14) Walk up the Allée du Ponant sea wall. Just before the bridge, turn left, then immediately right, then cross the D62E1 to reach the Parking du Ponant car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is rated as moderate due to its length, but is actually quite easy. Comfortable footwear is recommended.
Walking on the beach is easy along the water's edge.

The Visorando app will be a bonus for this urban route given the large number of pedestrian walkways.

If you are coming from Palavas, you can start the hike at the Parking de Dunes (gratiot) car park, between (8) and (9).

La Grande Motte: "You either love it or you hate it", it's up to you...

The eastern part is the "masculine" district, with more "square" architecture. The western part is the "feminine" district, with softer shapes and curves.

A little history here

Jean Balladur's aesthetic sense, even in the details: the benches, the street lamps, the footbridges, the entrance to the cemetery and its layout, the church furniture, the first aid stations on the beach, the toilets at the port...

Thank you, thank you. Thanks to you, we had a wonderful day wandering around this fascinating city. The route takes you past some of the city’s most distinctive buildings. The section along the sea lets you stroll right by the water’s edge. We’ll definitely be doing this walk again.

A very comprehensive tour of this surprising city, one of the few, along with Brasilia, to have been entirely designed before being built. But here, they didn't settle for concrete blocks like social housing; originality is evident in each of the façades and on each of the sloping sides of these pyramids that the Mayans would not have disowned. A beautiful and interesting discovery of this architectural avant-gardism, well accepted today but so criticised at the time of its construction! We find similar features in the cemetery, which is also worth a visit.

A walk mainly in an urban setting, but enjoyable nonetheless.
In our opinion, the "visit" to the cemetery is uninteresting; the pyramids mentioned are monuments that hold the urns containing the ashes of the deceased...

A superb walk, easy for hikers, a very pleasant discovery of La Grande Motte, a small modern town nestled in the vegetation. St Augustine's Church is a gem, with splendid wooden beams and stained glass windows, not to be missed.
Thank you for this beautiful walk, we had a wonderful day.

A varied route, but with a bit too much tarmac.
