Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Maison de la Camargue Gardoise and walk to the tower.
This hike is not marked, except for the discovery trail, where you simply follow the arrows.

(S/E) Enter to access the discovery trail. The tour is clockwise. Pass between small ponds, near a viewpoint, then along the edge of the Étang de la Marette, before returning to the site house.

(S/E) On leaving, turn left to reach the access road. Follow it to the left, along the footpath, running alongside the canal and then the boatyard.

(1) At the Quai des Croisades marker, turn right towards Pont Rouge and walk along the marina. Climb a few steps to reach the bridge (Pont Rouge) and cross the channel.

(2) On the other side, cross the roundabout to reach the bottom of the ramparts, then turn right and walk along them on your left. You will arrive at the large esplanade on the south-west side of the city. Continue for about 50 metres until you reach the alley on the left.

(3) Follow it until you see information panels on Aigues-Mortes and the salt marshes on your right. Turn right towards the viewpoint. After the viewpoint, continue left along the wooden walkway. Further on, you will reach the concrete path at the south-eastern corner of the ramparts.

(4) Continue straight ahead along the bottom of the eastern ramparts. Opposite the Porte de la Reine, take a short detour along Chemin Bas de Paccais for a lovely view of the ramparts from a vineyard with a stone shelter. On your return, continue around the ramparts to the main gate on the north side, the Porte Saint-Antoine.

(5) Turn left to enter the fortified town via Boulevard Gambetta. Take the third left, Rue Paul Bert, to the Chapelle des Pénitents Gris (private, information panels on the square). Return to Boulevard Gambetta and continue left. Turn right at the third street, Rue du 14 Juillet, then take the first right, Rue Louis Blanc. Continue straight ahead until you reach the T-junction with Rue de la République.

(6) On the right is the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs (also not open to visitors). Turn left, take the first left onto Rue d'Alsace Lorraine (note the old post office), pass behind the Église Notre-Dame des Sablons and arrive at the main square, with the town hall and a statue-fountain of Saint Louis. Walk around the square, then take the street that passes in front of the church, Grand'Rue Jean Jaurès, take the first left onto Rue du 4 Septembre and arrive at Place du Château in front of the museum.

(7) Go inside for a tour of the Tour de Constance and a walk around the ramparts. See the Practical Information section. The tour is optional and there is an admission charge, but I have included it in this itinerary.

(7) When you leave the museum, head left towards Place Anatole France and exit the fortified town through the first gate you come to. On the other side, cross the road to reach the canal and turn left to find the Pont Rouge.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to the car park at the Maison de la Camargue Gardoise (S/E).

I think it's worth visiting the ramparts, as they offer beautiful views of the marshes and canals to the north, the salt marshes to the south and the rooftops of the fortified city.
During your tour of the ramparts, both above and below, pay particular attention to the Porte de la Reine on the east side, which is decorated with beautiful sculptures.

Free parking that day, yay! We included a visit to the ramparts (€9), which circle the entire city with beautiful detours around the fortification towers... and especially the magnificent Constance Tower. Go there to see the exceptionally beautiful and original interior construction. It was winter, a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine and few people around, as everyone was at the restaurant, ha ha, so we had a picnic in the sun.

A very pleasant hike, even though I shortened the intramural city section a little.
For the discovery trail, you mention that there are opening hours, but you don't say what they are. In short, it's 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and be aware that the car park is closed before and after closing time (it remains open during the lunch break). There are also days when it is closed, but I didn't make a note of them.
Otherwise, I visited the small museum, which is nice.

A very nice route that allows you to discover a little bit of nature (Camargue house), the salt marshes and the town of Aigues Mortes. Very diverse, we enjoyed it.
