Description of the walk

Access: Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrainstation on the Transilien N line, Paris-Dreux branch.

The trail is marked along its entire length with the red and white GR® markings.

(S) From Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrain station, join the D191 and follow it to the right until the next crossroads, where you will join the GR® coming from the left.

(1) Follow the GR® trail by taking the road on the right through the business park to the railway line, then turn left onto the path running alongside the line, just before the level crossing. Continue to the bridge under the railway line, where the GR® branch from Paris joins the circular loop that circles the region.

(2) Continue straight ahead along the railway line (without going under the bridge) to start the circular route heading north. Continue to the next level crossing and take the road to the left (away from the railway line). Cross the D191 with caution to reach the hamlet of Cressay. Cross several branches of the Mauldre river and turn right immediately afterwards, near an old mill and a wash house. Join Rue de Beynes and turn right.

(3) Continue straight ahead as you leave the hamlet, pass under the power lines and in front of the Chapelle farm, then over the Avre aqueduct, which is perpendicular to the path here.

(4) Continue straight ahead until you reach the edge of the Beynes forest and a gas installation, then take a path that climbs to the left just after.

(5) Climb up to the forest plateau until you reach a road, take the path at a 90° angle to the left, then about 50 metres further on, take the path on the right that leads diagonally away. Follow this straight path to the Grande Table crossroads, the third crossroads you come to, where eight paths meet in a star shape.

(6) Take the second path on the left (at 90°), pass another gas installation and continue to the next crossroads. Take the second path on the right, also at 90°. Continue straight ahead, passing other gas installations, cross a road after a descent, climb up the other side and reach the Petite Table crossroads, where eight paths converge again.

(7) Take the third path on the left, onto a wide track. Pass two gas installations and two crossroads, continuing straight ahead, and reach the edge of the forest under the power lines.

(8) Turn left along the edge of the forest, cross the D11 with caution and continue straight on to the D76. Take this road to the right for a good hundred metres before taking a path perpendicular to the left across the fields.

(9) Continue straight ahead for about 500 metres, then turn slightly to the right when another path joins from the left. Continue straight ahead until you reach a larger path. Take this path to the right until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Sanctin chapel at the edge of the woods.

(10) Continue in the same direction on a narrower path (ignoring the main path to the right). Walk to the D11 without crossing it and turn left onto the small road.

(11) Continue along the road to the village of Autouillet. Pass the wash house and take the second right towards the church.

(12) Leave the church on your left and continue along Route de la Haye Frogeay until you cross the Avre aqueduct again.

(13) Turn right and follow the aqueduct trail, which is clearly marked by a large grassy mound and a path running alongside it. Follow the aqueduct as it crosses the Marmot woods, ignoring the various paths that cross it. Cross a road at the edge of the woods and, 500 metres further on, leave the aqueduct trail (which crosses a closed enclosure) and follow the road to the right for 200 metres. At the crossroads, take another road to the left for 100 metres to return to the aqueduct trail and follow it for 400 metres.

(14) Then follow the GR® which veers right, leaving the aqueduct track. Turn left when you reach the edge of the woods and walk along it. Take the third path on the right when it is no longer possible to continue straight ahead.

(15) Turn left immediately afterwards, then right into the woods, heading towards Flexanville cemetery and the village centre. Take the second street on the left in the village, Rue Roger Darin. Pass in front of the church and continue to the edge of the village. Then turn right and pass in front of Flexanville farm.

(16) Continue along the farm buildings and then across the fields. Turn right onto a perpendicular path that runs alongside the stream and follow it to the next crossroads, just before the Poussinière farm.

(17) Leave the GR® 11 trail straight ahead and turn left onto a smaller path taken by the GR® 22 trail. Cross the Flexanville stream (be careful, this crossing can be tricky) and continue straight ahead up onto the plateau. Continue in the same direction, keeping the Orgerus bell tower in sight. Cross the D45 diagonally, then the D42 and the Avre aqueduct again, and continue to Orgerus church.

(18) Go around the church on your right, take Rue de Moutier on your left, then Rue de la Gare again on your left to reach Orgerus-Béhoust station (E).

Arrival: Orgerus-Béhoust station, on the Transilien N line, Paris-Dreux branch.

Notes

(S) Departure from Villiers-Neauphle-Pontchartrain station on the Paris-Dreux branch of line N (Montparnasse network). One train per hour in each direction.
(E) Arrival at Orgerus-Béhoust station, further along the same Paris-Dreux branch of line N, served by the same trains and therefore at the same frequency.

Although it connects two stations on the same line, the hike does not follow it, so it is not possible to reach an intermediate station to shorten the stage.

A beautiful and varied stage, with some elevation changes at the beginning, so good footwear is recommended. The path along the aqueduct can be tricky in wet weather (potentially muddy paths).

Hike completed on 24 March 2024 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.

Worth a visit

  • Hamlet of Cressay, mill and wash house on the banks of the Mauldre (3)
  • Avre aqueduct, first crossed at (4), then skirted between (13) and (14) and crossed again at the end of the stage (18)
  • Beynes Forest between (5) and (9), where the presence of numerous gas installations is surprising. It overlooks a strategic gas storage site
  • Saint-Sanctin Chapel in the woods (10)
  • Autouillet, with its wash house and Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church (12)
  • Magnificent agricultural landscapes
  • Flexanville, its Saint-Germain church and its beautiful farm (16)
  • Orgerus and its Saint-Pierre church (18)
