The Tremblay-sur-Mauldre circular route

This is a walk around Pontchartrain, passing through Villiers-Saint-Frédéric, Neauphle-le-Vieux, Mareil-le-Guyon and Tremblay-sur-Mauldre. You will follow restored footpaths amongst castles, rivers and fields.

Description of the walk

From Paris, Montparnasse station, take the N line towards Dreux.

(S/E) From Villiers-Saint-Frédéric station, turn left and take the access path to reach the other side of the station. With your back to the station, turn left onto Rue de la Gare and follow the railway line.

(1) At the stop sign, turn left and cross the level crossing with care. Go under a bridge and arrive at a junction with the Route des Beynes at another stop sign. Cross this road and continue straight on along Rue Charles de Gaulle until the next junction.

(2) Turn right onto Route de Versailles, cross the Ruisseau du Lieutel, pass the Centre Equestre et de Loisirs des Fauvettes and continue to Place Maximilien.

(3) At the war memorial, turn left onto Rue de la Libération. Pass the Neauphle-le-Vieux signpost, then the Ruisseau du Lieutel until you reach a fork in the road with a small chapel. The Moulin à Tan is on your left.

(4) Continue straight on towards Saint-Aubin, across fields for about 1 km. Pass the railway lines, then the Ferme de Saint-Aubin. You will reach the D912; continue straight on until you reach the roundabout.

(5) Go round the roundabout on the left, take the path that runs alongside the road and leads over the N12 bridge. Continue straight on, following the N12 for a short while, then turn left onto Rue du Pasti and arrive at the Mareil-Le-Guyon cemetery.

(6) Head straight on towards the village of Mareil-Le-Guyon. At the three-way junction, turn left and cross the Guyonne.

(7) Reach the bend in the Grande Rue and take the left-hand side. Pass in front of Mareil Castle and the church.

(8) When the bend turns left, continue straight on for about 100 metres along Rue de la Garenne until the next junction with a path.

(9) Turn left into the fields onto the Sentier de la Digue, following the GR®11. Cross the Rubeille d’Orgueil river, then come to a stony path.

(10) Continue for 50 metres, then turn right onto the Chemin des Aulnes de Montphilippe towards the farm. Continue to the junction.

(11) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on the Route du Tremblay, entering Tremblay-sur-Mauldre via Rue du Pavé. Walk alongside the wall of Tremblay Castle and continue straight on towards the church.

(12) At the stop sign, continue straight on, passing the town hall and the church of Saint-Leu and Saint-Gilles.

(13) Turn left onto the D13, still following Rue du Pavé. Pass a tobacconist’s, then at the three-way junction, turn left onto Rue de la Mauldre. Cross the river of the same name and continue to the junction with a path.

(14) Turn left onto a path called "Chemin de Bourg Vallée", then turn right onto Rue des Roches. At the junction, continue straight ahead onto Rue Robert Villain.

(15) Turn left and cross the fields along the Chemin des Croix de Pierre and the Chemin de l'Aviateur Aitken. Walk past the Jouars cemetery, turn right onto the road, then left onto the Chemin de la Messe to cross the fields.

(16) When you reach the road, first turn left then right, cross the Ru d'Elancourt, then at the three-way junction, take the right-hand path along Rue de Château Vilain. Continue for about 100 metres until you reach the steps on the left.

(17) Take the stairs and keep left onto Rue de Chennevières until you reach a path on the right. Take this path and you will come to a roundabout. Go straight across the roundabout and take Rue de la Butte à Madame, which heads off to the right.

(18) Enter the Bois de la Pierre Sauteuse via a path. At the fork, follow the path to the left then to the right. Turn left onto Chemin des Bordes, then right onto Rue des Bordes until you reach the hospital. Take the Sentier du Haut des Bordes on the right, then the Sentier de la Chaussée au Coq on the left. When you reach a crossroads of paths, first turn right then left to rejoin Chemin de Bricassard and return to a road.

(19) Turn right onto Rue de Neauphle and further on, at the fork to the left, take the path known as Chemin de la Fontaine de Launay. Cross a road and continue straight ahead until you reach the next road. Turn right onto Chemin du Petit Trou until you reach the road.

(20) Turn left for about 100 metres, then right onto the Micholle path. Walk alongside the cemetery, then turn left onto Rue des 2 Neauphle until you reach the roundabout. Cross it and continue straight on until you reach Route de Beynes.

(21) Turn right onto Rue de la Gare and return to the starting point (S/E).
