Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park at the stadium on Chemin de la Rode in Signes, Var.

Red and white markings forthe GR® 51 and 99

(S/E) Head straight east to take the Chemin du Cimetière and head south.

(1) Turn right onto theGR® 51 and continue south. Pass the turn-off for La Billonne on your left and carry straight on.

(2) Head straight up a very steep path, leaving theGR® on your left (return route). This marks the start of today’s tough stretch over two short kilometres. Only OSM maps part of the path.

(3) Turn right and carry on straight ahead twice. The path is well marked; you can’t go wrong.

(4) Turn left and follow the path alongside the Siou Blanc forest road.

(5) Turn left and walk for about a hundred metres.

(6) Turn left onto a path marked with red dots on the bushes.

(7) Turn left to climb towards the Tête de la Paillette.

(8) At the summit, enjoy the view if the weather permits, despite the high-voltage pylon which spoils the view a little. Head back down the track towards the south and keep left until you pass under the high-voltage line again. You’ll arrive at a large cultivated field.

(9) Take the track on the left and follow it.

(10) Climb up a path on the right, then head back down towards the Limate plain.

Red and white markings forthe GR® 51 and 99

(11) Head up to the left and turn right towards the monument.

(12) The memorial to the Resistance fighters is clearly visible in the middle of the plain. Head north towards the farm and follow the GR®.

(13) Turn right to continue onthe GR® and begin the long, sometimes rather rugged descent that will take you back to Signes.

(2) Return to the path you took on the way out and head northwards. After a good kilometre, you’ll reach the car park (S/E).

The route is mainly through woodland, with few views and few people (which is better); the natural environment is well preserved, though it’s only moderately interesting.

A walk beneath the oak trees; very few views; sections over rocky terrain; best undertaken using Visorando GPS.

The route runs mostly through woodland, which can be pleasant in hot weather. At the top, there’s a lovely view – but a rather unsightly pylon too!
Fortunately, the Limate plain is quite lovely.

Motocross track / wild boar hunt...
Apart from that, without a GPS you’ll quickly get lost, despite all the commendable efforts of the volunteer hikers who mapped out this route. Thanks to them, to Galileo and to the IGN.

Thank you for this lovely walk. The only view is at the summit, but it’s absolutely stunning! Otherwise, there’s plenty of woodland and undergrowth, and the Signes plateau.
The route is perfectly marked and the signposts are reliable and helpful.
No problems between points 2 and 3; you just need to stay on the path – it’s impossible to get lost.
It takes just under two hours to reach the summit (point 8).

We found the route to be a fun adventure. We thought we might run into some difficulties between points 2 and 3, given that the route wasn’t marked on the map, but everything went smoothly.

- Nevertheless, we made a mistake before point 3 by turning right too early. We found ourselves under the high-voltage power line at Cros de Gaget, where we were easily able to get back on track via a small path heading south.

- At point 6, the markers are initially pink-purple, then red; there is also a small cairn which we added to.

- Magnificent view at the pylon where we had our picnic.

- Between points 9 and 10, the track is wide and lovely. Don’t miss the small path that climbs to the right: it starts at the foot of a large oak tree marked with a sign saying ‘chasse gardée, la Limate’; there is also a small cairn.

- We descended to the memorial stone, taking the opportunity to replace two dry wreaths that had been blown out of place by the wind.

- At point 13, the fork is clearly marked on two venerable oak trees and a signpost. But you must be careful not to continue along the pretty path, as the entrance to the GR is on a small, barely visible track to the right.

- The return route is as described: a long, rugged descent.

A lovely walk, then, with scenery quite different from what we’re used to on the Signes plateau.
Note that we parked in the boules court car park near the church, which brought us closer to point 1.
