Description of the walk

(S) Leave the car park heading towards Spain, south-south-west. Pass a roundabout, leave a petrol station on your right and continue.

(1) At the Cami Vell d'Auvinya sign, take the winding ramp on the left, marked in yellow and red. Continue along the narrow path to the Rabassa Road.

(2) Turn left onto this road, then take the first road on the right uphill, passing the recycling point.

(3) Head up towards Aubinyà via the first path on the right, following the low wall. At the first houses, turn left towards the centre of Aubinyà along the cobbled street. Continue straight on, pass the chapel, turn left then immediately right and climb up to a wider path.

(4) Turn left onto this track, then take the first track on the right. Pass between the buildings to reach a wider track; follow it to the right for about 50 metres.

(5) Leave this path and head straight on towards the road above, cross it and continue straight ahead along the wide path known as Cami els Hortells. Continue straight on until you reach the Route de la Rabassa.

(6) Follow this road to the left, passing through Juberri.

(7) On leaving Juberri, turn right onto Carrer del Bosc, pass the first house ( Xalet del Fax), and follow the long green fence.

(8) Turn left at the fire hydrant (yellow and red markings) and enter the forest through the gap between the two properties. Continue to the left and follow the path, which is initially flat and then climbs.

(9) At the junction, turn right and begin the long, steep climb towards Naturlandia, then join a track at Collada Fosca.

(10) Take this on the left, go round the enclosure to the Route de la Rabassa, then follow this road to the right. Remember to stock up on water at the bar on the right; there are also toilets.

(11) At the junction, turn left and follow the main path (marked in yellow and red), ignoring all the small paths to the right and left.

(12) After a right-hand bend, leave the main path and continue climbing straight on towards the Roca de Pimes refuge. Pass the refuge and continue down the slope, ignoring all the paths to the right and left.

(13) Cross the Riu d'Aubinyà and continue climbing along the main path. Ignore a first path on the right and then, a little further up, two shortcuts on the right. You will reach the Camp Ramonet junction.

(14) Continue climbing to the left.

(15) Leave the main path and take the track (shortcut) on the right.

(16) Return to the main path and continue the climb towards Pic Nègre de Claror.

(17) At the summit of Pic Nègre (2,642 m), turn right and begin the descent towards Port Nègre.

(18) Turn left on the descent towards Clot de Port Nègre.

(19) At the fork in the road, stay on the path on the right to reach the Claror Refuge.

(20) Continue along the descending path, leaving a track on your left, cross the stream and the meadow to enter the wooded area. Reach Estany de la Nou, turn left and follow the stream flowing from it for a few dozen metres, then turn right to reach a meadow. Continue to the Pedrafita Refuge (E).

You have to be curious enough to venture far south of the Principality of Andorra to have heard of the Monturull peak, the Tossal Bovinar or the Colilla peak; names that are not as famous as the great peaks of the West. However, these peaks are well over 2,700 metres, even reaching 2,800 metres, and are located in eastern Catalonia. The ridge on today's itinerary is located just south of the Principality of Andorra. It marks the southern border with Spain. The southern slope of this ridge is gentle and accessible, while the northern slope is made up of ravines and steep cliffs. Naturally, the southern route is the most popular, but I decided to tackle this journey by looping around the north. I will therefore start this loop from the Madriu Valley in Andorra.

A different side of Andorra if you want to get away from the shopping centres! A demanding hike (it’s a tough climb) without being difficult, but offering sublime 360° views of the surrounding Pyrenean peaks and valleys. At the start and finish, in the shade of mountain pines, and if you’re hiking in late August, there are raspberries to enjoy all along the way.

Pic de la Coma Pedrosa is the highest peak in Andorra. This route takes you around it, allowing you to explore the valleys to the north on the Spanish side as well as the Estanys Forcats, far from the hordes of hikers heading for the summit. Please note: the descent from Portella de Baiau is not recommended for those who are not used to mountain terrain and are afraid of steep slopes. Part of the route is off-trail but presents no significant difficulty.

A fairly demanding hike through mountain pines and rhododendrons to reach the refuge and then the Étangs d'Ensagents, set in a predominantly mineral environment. The calm, the omnipresent water and the beauty of the landscapes more than compensate for the considerable effort required to negotiate a few very steep passages. A breath of fresh air just a few kilometres from the consumer frenzy of Pas de la Case.

The fourth stage is in the high mountains, easier than the previous two, allowing you to reduce your effort. Many trails through forests and woodlands make for a more bucolic and enjoyable hike. This stage presents no technical difficulties, but orientation and following the route are complicated due to numerous crossings and intersections of hiking trails. It is essential to have a hiking app and the GPX track to avoid getting lost.

Pic de l'Estanyo is the second highest peak in Andorra (2,915 m). The view of the other peaks in Andorra is magnificent. It is accessible from Sorteny or Ransol for the most well-known routes. It can also be accessed from Canillo, which is the subject of this guide. This is a long hike with a significant elevation gain. The trail is generally well marked up to Estany Gran, then you have to follow the cairns and the trail where it exists.
