Circuit of Pic de la Coma Pedrosa

Pic de la Coma Pedrosa is the highest peak in Andorra. This route takes you around it, allowing you to explore the valleys to the north on the Spanish side as well as the Estanys Forcats, far from the hordes of hikers heading for the summit.
Please note: the descent from Portella de Baiau is not recommended for those who are not used to mountain terrain and are afraid of steep slopes.
Part of the route is off-trail but presents no significant difficulty.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park to the north-west of Arinsal. The first part of the route follows theGR®11.

(S/E) From the Arinsal car park, go through the tunnel then take the road on the right. Continue along the path.

(1) At the junction with the return path, continue left onto the marked path. This is a fairly wide forest track. Further on, after crossing to the right bank of the Riu de Coma, the track narrows into a path and the gradient becomes steeper.

(2) A flat section allows you to catch your breath before tackling a steep climb that leads to a small pass.

(3) The Coma Pedrosa refuge is further up, via a path on your left. Allow about fifteen minutes if you wish to go there. Otherwise, continue straight on into the Coma Pedrosa valley.
At the bottom of the valley, the path turns north and climbs up grassy slopes to a first lake before reaching Estany Negra. The area around the lakes is much rockier and there are a few scree slopes to cross.

(4) Continue along the valley floor, leaving the path that climbs to the summit of Coma Pedrosa on your right.
The path is not very well marked before reaching the Portella de Baiau. Head towards the pass by sight. There are no difficulties in this area.

(5) From Portella de Baiau, take the path that descends towards Estany de Baiau. You are now in Spain. Be careful: the path is steep and the ground is covered in gravel. The gravel is loose enough that the descent is ultimately manageable without too much difficulty. Nevertheless, it is daunting for those with a fear of heights. Arrive at Estany de Baiau.

(6) Leave theGR®11and head up the small valley on your right. There used to be a path here, but it has now disappeared. Climb up to the left of the stream, across the grassy slopes. The right-hand side of the stream consists of scree. Look for old markings a little further up which lead to the pass.

(7) At the Collada dels Estanys Forcats, rejoin a path that descends down the gravel and scree slopes. You are back in Andorra. A late snowfield may be present at the pass: if so, go round it on the right. Follow the path down towards the Estanys Forcats.

(8) At the largest of the Forcats lakes, the path leaves the scree zone and begins the descent down grassy slopes towards the Pla de l'Estany refuge.

(9) Continue along the path, which then joins a track. Pass close to some chalets.

(10) Continue along the path which descends, initially gently through the forest, then drops sharply to join theGR®11.

(1) Follow the road back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Best undertaken towards the end of the season due to the possible presence of snowfields that may cause difficulties at Col dels Estanys Forcats.

A long and isolated hike in its northern section; ensure you have suitable equipment (rain jacket, warm clothing, trail food and water...).

Few water sources on the ascent (apart from at the refuge). Shortly after Estanys Forcats, you cross streams where you may be able to fill your water bottle.

Worth a visit

The Coma Pedrosa refuge is a good place to eat or rest at the start of the route.
The Estanys de Forcats for a dip of the feet.

Hello, over two days I did a combination of your hike and the one suggested by user no. 370139, including the climb to the summit of Coma Pedrosa.
For the peak, you need to pay attention to the markings when you reach Lac Nègre to reach the ridges, but it’s not difficult and the view is AMAZING!
The descent from the Porteille de Baiau is indeed tricky. I had my tent sent on ahead, but there was space at the unmanned refuge. A beautiful sunset in a splendid setting.
The next day, I climbed up via the Col des Etangs de Forcat, where I saw chamois, mouflons and marmots. A short round trip to the Médécourbe (a technical climb where you need to use your hands – not for the faint-hearted). Superb views of Soulcem, Mont Calme, etc...
A small snowfield below the pass to descend to the lakes, which I was able to bypass on the right. (Take care depending on the time of year).
Great hike! Thanks for your description.

I climbed that peak from Arinsal.
Very fond memories.
You need to be (a bit) careful before the summit, as it’s quite exposed.
And one more, ever higher, even higher.
Highest peak in the Pyrenees: Carlit.
Highest peak in Catalonia ica d'Estats.
Highest peak in Andorra: Coma Pedrosa.
Highest peak in the Ariège: Montcalm.
Highest peak in the entire Pyrenees: Aneto (alas, couldn’t make it, only as far as the upper gate, 2800m, as the storm was gathering, sniff.
Otherwise, I’ve climbed all the others mentioned.

A lovely hike,
I added the climb up to Pic de la Coma Pedrosa via the ridges (not for those with a fear of heights and/or who aren’t physically fit), I took a wrong turn at the lake (though I admit I didn’t have the GPX file to hand), and took another wrong turn getting to the other side; it’s quite a challenging route (not suitable for families or children) but very enjoyable. A few hikers on the ascent; I felt alone on the way back (even though it was July). No (more) snowfields.
I completed the whole thing, including the climb to the peak and the detours, in 6½ hours (yes, I push myself hard).
I’d recommend this hike as a physical challenge rather than a leisurely stroll ;-)
Thanks anyway for the route.

A long and demanding route best tackled in August or September to avoid late snowfields.
From Collada dels Estanys Forcats, a vast snowfield forced us to cross over the top of the scree and descend along the steepest slope to the Plat de l’Estany refuge.
Despite this difficulty, the hike is magnificent and awe-inspiring, a moment of intense joy.
