From Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée to Roure via the canal

This route begins in woodland where wild strawberries grow, followed by an unusual, little-used canal, before joining the GR®5. The beautiful village of Roure is well worth a visit: original wash house, fountains, a wealth of renowned local heritage.

Description of the walk

Park in the lower car park in the village.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the bridge crossing the Tinée river. At the end of the bridge, turn right with caution towards "le stade" and follow the Tinée. Cross the Tinée again on a metal footbridge and continue along the river.

(1) Turn left onto the Route de Roure and continue for a few metres, crossing the bridge with caution. At the end of the bridge, turn right at marker 233 towards "Roure". This old wooded path along the Tinée is little used and runs alongside a water pipe that ends in a reservoir.

(2) Go around the reservoir on the right, then immediately take the stone steps on the left. The crossroads at signpost 321 is on the right (this signpost is not marked on the map). Turn left towards "Circuit de Giut", following the canal covered with concrete slabs. This route overlooks and offers views of the village of Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée. In the wooded area, a water pipe provides some coolness.

(3) Start of the GR®5 markings. Marker 234. At this junction between the canal and the trail, turn right towards "Roure" and continue along this wooded uphill trail.

(4) At marker 235, continue towards "Roure". The village is visible above.

(5) Cross the Roure road with caution and take the slightly left-hand carriageway, which is partly cemented.

(6) At the end of the path, follow the Roure road for about 100 metres. This bend is dangerous. Although the highway code recommends walking on the left, the right-hand side offers a safer angle of vision.

(7) Turn left onto a beautiful forest track, which becomes a path after the settling area. A beautiful natural stone path runs alongside the entrance to the village, next to a concrete base and a metal pylon base, remnants of a cable support from the time when Roure was an isolated village. At the old wash house, follow the signs to the church

(8) Turn left at thefountain-wash house with its triple stone arch, topped by a terrace for hanging laundry.

(9) Place Jules Mallet, where you will find the Saint-Laurent Church, a listed historic monument, and the village tourist office. Turn around.

(8) Walk along the wash house and continue straight ahead on Rue Centrale, then Rue du Brec, which leads to the village entrance. Return along the GR®5 in the opposite direction until you reach marker 234.

(3) Continue straight ahead and follow the GR®5 to the village of Saint Sauveur-sur-Tinée.

(10) Cross the road with caution and continue along the path opposite.

(11) Cross the road with caution: poor visibility. Continue for about 50 metres along the road, then descend to the right.

(12) Cross the road with caution. Follow the path alongside the cemetery and the school before entering the village.

(13) Turn left at the signpost, cross the bridge over the Tinée and return to the car park (S/E).
