From Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet to Lesquerde via Saint-Arnac

A cycle ride through the Fenouille region. Initially, you follow the River Agly, then cycle through the vineyards, with the added bonus of a beautiful view of the Canigou massif. All the villages produce wine bearing the ‘Agly’ appellation followed by the village name.

Description of the route

Start from the car park at Place Pierre Mendès France, Le Réal housing estate, at the end of Rue Gilbert Brutus.

(S/E) Leave the housing estate and follow Rue Gilbert Brutus. At the next junction, turn left, then left again at the end of Rue Louis Noguère, passing the emergency services centre. Continue straight ahead onto the D619 until you reach the Clue de la Fou.

(1) Carry on to the right along the D619, cross the Roman bridge over the Agly, with the ancient thermal baths on your right and the hot springs (28°C) on your left. This is also the start of the Via Ferrata. Continue for a few metres until you reach the next junction.

(2) Carry on to the left on the D619 for about 3 km until you reach the next junction.

(3) Leave the D619 and turn left onto the D77. Cross the bridge over the Agly, then begin a lovely little climb. Pass through the village of Saint-Arnac and reach the Col de Lacroux.

(4) Continue with caution down the fairly steep descent.You’ll reach the entrance to the quarry.

(5) Take the small D79 road on the left and follow it for about 2 km until you reach the D19, a road running across.

(6) Turn left onto it, heading towards Lesquerde, a small village famous for its rock formation. As you leave the village, take care on the descent. On your left, note the view of the Canigou range. Return to the Clue de la Fou and the starting junction of the circular route.

(1) Turn right towards Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and follow the D619 in the opposite direction to the outward journey, returning to Place Pierre Mendès France (S/E).

Notes

There is no drinking water in the villages along the route, except on the outskirts of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet at the Clue de la Foue, a thermal spring at around 28°C.

Worth a visit

In Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, visit the Chapter House, the museum and the 14th-century church with its altarpiece. Visit the Galamus Gorges and its hermitage.
Stop off at Maury to discover the many ‘trompe-l’œil’ paintings. Sample the wines of the Agly Valley, which boast a variety of appellations.
