Description of the walk

Access: Moret-Veneux-les-Sablonsstation , Transilien line R. Go to the northernmost platform, serving the Montereau direction.

The route, which is largely in the Forest of Fontainebleau, is marked with the red and white GR® signs until (28). It does not follow any markings during the short urban section, then joins the GR®13 at (34).

(S) From the platform for Montereau at Moret station, go down the embankment via the path that leads directly to it. When you reach Rue du Viaduc below, turn right to rejoin the GR® on a path that branches off to the left at an acute angle.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(1) Follow the path between the gardens of houses and the cultivated area and join the Chemin du Passeur, which runs perpendicular to it. Turn left, cross Rue du Viaduc again and continue straight ahead to climb up towards the railway tracks and the bridge that spans them.

This small detour to reach the bridge at (2) was suggested to rejoin the GR® where we left it during the previous stage. However, from the station platform, it is also possible to go directly to (2) by following the path along the tracks on the left, while remaining at the same level.

(2) Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead. When you reach the church in Veneux, cross the Route de Bourgogne immediately afterwards, then first turn right then left onto Avenue de Fontainebleau Veneux 100 metres further on. Then take Rue de la Grande Cour followed by Rue de la Grenouillère, which turns right.

(3) Just after the bend, turn left onto Rue des Bois and continue straight ahead until you reach the D606.

(4) Cross the D606 via the underpass and enter the forest on the other side. Follow Route des Sablons, continuing west-southwest. Go through the forest gate opposite, turn left at the three-way junction, go through the Aqueduc de la Vanne trench and you will reach a crossroads with six converging paths. Continue straight ahead to the next crossroads.

(5) Take Route du Rocher Besnard opposite, slightly to the right, then turn left again at the three-way junction that follows. Go straight ahead at the next crossroads and you will reach the Aqueduc du Loing trench, which passes under Route Desquinemare, perpendicular to it. Continue straight ahead until you reach a three-way junction before the D148 road.

(6) Turn right, cross the road and continue straight ahead on the path that climbs up to the Malmontagne plateau. At the top, turn left at the three-way junction and follow the edge of the plateau. You will reach a perpendicular road at the top of the climb.

(7) Continue straight ahead, pass a watchtower, continue along the edge of the plateau until you reach a crossroads.

(8) Optional detour: continue straight ahead to the viewpoint at the end of the plateau (otherwise, turn right to continue on the route.

(9) At the viewpoint, turn right to continue along the edge of the plateau, this time on the north side, to retrace your steps towards the east. Pass a first crossroads to reach a second one, still on the plateau.

(10) Turn left to descend northwards. Once at the bottom, turn left and join the Route du Rocher Besnard. First turn left then right to take the Route de la Croix du Grand Maître on the right. You will then reach the crossroads of the same name with a car park where a cross has been erected and where the D301 and D148 also meet.

(11) Cross the crossroads and take the path opposite on the left, between the D301 (Route Ronde) on the left and the D148 on the right. Continue straight ahead, passing two crossroads. At the third, turn right onto Route de Fontainebleau in Montigny. Follow it to Route de Médicis, past the aqueducts visible ahead.

(12) Turn left to follow the aqueducts. Pass the D58, then reach a new crossroads.

(13) Take the first path on the left to climb the Mont Merle massif. Pass a perpendicular path on the way up, and turn right once you reach the top. Leave a path on the right, pass another and reach the Carrefour du Daim, where eight paths converge.

(14) Take Route de la Fanfare, the second road on the left, then, at the next crossroads, take Route de Valmy, the second road on the right. Follow it straight ahead, descending into a small valley between two hills.

(15) After descending, turn left at the crossroads to climb Rocher Fourceau on the other side. Pass the sandstone blocks to reach a T-junction. Turn left then right, continuing to climb. You will then arrive at Carrefour du Chevreuil with more imposing paths.

(16) Take the Route de l'Inspecteur Général, which is straight and perpendicular to the left. Follow it for 1 km to the end and the viewpoint of the same name.

(17) Turn right after the viewpoint to take the path that descends. Follow a left-hand bend, continue and arrive at a new crossroads. Go straight ahead on the right and arrive at the Route du Chevillard. Continue straight ahead on the right along the path that climbs, and follow it in a straight line to the Route des Forts de Marlotte.

(18) Turn left onto the road, pass the D301 and continue straight ahead, following the nature reserve for 200 metres.

(19) When the road veers to the left, turn right and continue to Route de Fontainebleau in Marlotte, which crosses diagonally. Follow it to the right to the Carrefour de la Croix Saint-Hérem junction with the D607.

(20) Cross the D607 carefully (using the central reservation) and continue on the path opposite, between the D301 on the left and the D607 on the right. Follow this Route du Pape, which runs almost straight through a small valley. You will arrive at the Carrefour de la Colombe, the sixth crossroads you come to.

(21) Continue straight on Route de la Colombe and reach the second crossroads: Carrefour du Rendez-vous

(22) Turn right and join the D63E2. Cross the road and continue straight ahead on Route du Vert Galant until you reach the junction with Route de la Jeunesse, the fourth junction after the road.

(23) Turn left opposite, heading towards the aqueduct arches visible ahead.

(24) Pass under the arches and turn left to walk alongside them, then climb up to their top. Continue slightly to the left as you climb until you reach the crest of Mont Morillon.

(25) Immediately turn right to descend. At the bottom, take the Route de Beringhem diagonally to the crossroads of the same name with seven paths, in the middle of the limestone lawn of Champ Minette (which contrasts with the forest landscape encountered until now).

(26) Continue on the third track on the left and carry on straight ahead until you cross the D152.

(27) Cross it carefully and continue opposite on Route d'Hurtault, passing in front of the I.U.T. and the high school. Go around them on the right until you reach Route de la Faisanderie. Follow it to the right until you reach the Maison Forestière de la Faisanderie.

No markings

(28) Leave the GR® here and turn sharply right towards the town and the station. Reach the Fontainebleau ring road (D606-D607).

(29) Cross the road via the underpass and turn left on the other side to follow it for 100 m. Then turn right onto thesecond street on the right: Rue Paul Tavernier, followed by Rue Henri Dunant and then Rue de la Faisanderie. You will arrive in front of the Collège International.

(30) Turn left until you reach the D606. Cross at the pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights and continue along the path opposite, back into the forest. Turn right to reach a car park at the corner of the cemetery.

(31) Turn right to walk along the cemetery wall and reach Route Louise on the other side.

(32) Take Route Louise on the left until the main road turns right at a right angle.

(33) Take the path opposite on the right and continue to the end of the Mont Ussy car park.

Red and white markings (GR®13)

(34) Turn right onto the path that passes under Mont Ussy. Pass two crossroads and turn right at the third to reach the D606 at the Oratoire Notre-Dame de Bon Secours.

(35) Cross the D606 on the pedestrian crossing. Also cross the Route de la Bonne Dame, which is perpendicular, and take the path opposite, which branches off to the right. Walk along this path, staying close to the road and below the hills. Pass several crossroads until you reach a larger one at the bottom of a small valley.

(36) Take the path furthest to the right, then turn left again to stay in roughly the same direction. Follow the path, which eventually joins the road and runs alongside it.

(37) At the end of the path parallel to the road, join it and cross it. Go down the few steps to reach the forecourt of Fontainebleau-Avon station just opposite (E).

Return: Fontainebleau-Avonstation , Transilien line R.

Notes

(S) Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons station, on the Transilien R line. Two trains per hour from Paris (one to Montereau and one to Montargis, with their respective services branching off here). A few TER trains also serve this station. If possible, I recommend arriving by train bound for Montereau, as the route for this stage begins precisely on the platform served by these trains.

(E) Fontainebleau-Avon station, on the common section of the same R line. Two trains per hour in each direction. A few rare TER trains also serve this station.

See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

In the forest, the trail is well marked, so it is relatively easy to follow despite the numerous crossroads. Nevertheless, a map is essential to find your way back if you stray from the path.

Be aware of the fairly rugged terrain of the Fontainebleau forest, which may surprise less experienced hikers. More than anywhere else, good equipment, especially good shoes, is essential here! That said, as there are many paths on this stage, it is easy to avoid the steep sections by staying on the main flat paths (which also means missing out on a few points of interest!).

At the end of the stage, after (28), the aim is to reach the station at the other end of the town. To do this, we suggest a route through the forest on the edge of town, with a short detour into town to avoid a long detour via the GR®13 to the Paris crossroads in the north, the only place outside the town that is close enough to safely cross the D607. It is of course also possible to head directly to the station by crossing the town from one side to the other, which would bring you closer to the castle and allow you to cross its grounds (this route will be proposed in the opposite direction duringthe next stage).

Hike completed on 14 July 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
