From Champagne-sur-Seine to Fontainebleau

A lovely walk offering the chance to discover, along the way, the paths running alongside the walls and vineyards of Thomery, and the Château de Rosa Bonheur. The route follows the Seine to the Port du Pays de Fontainebleau, passing via the Butte de Montceau and through the Forest of Avon.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at Champagne-sur-Seine stationfrom Paris, Gare de Lyon – R train, towards Montargis.

(S) From the station, head towards the bridge to cross the Seine via Rue de Champagne.

(1) Enter Thomery. Go round a roundabout and continue straight on along Rue du 4 Septembre towards the Town Hall.

(2) Turn left towards Fontainebleau-Avon onto the D301. Pass the Town Hall, then, when you reach four garages with dark green metal roller shutters, turn left.

(3) Take this track, the Chemin des Longs Sillons, between walls and vineyards.

(4) Continue left along this path until the next junction.

(5) Turn left and you’ll come to Rue de By. Turn left, then right, onto Rue des Chardonnières and carry on straight ahead round the bend.

(6) Take the Chemin des Grands Clos on the right, then the Chemin du Lavoir.

(7) At the wash house, turn left and follow the Seine along the Sentier des Lavoirs.

(8) Turn right and continue straight on along Rue de la Source, then turn left onto Rue du 14 Juillet and immediately right.

(9) Cross Rue Rosa Bonheur and continue straight ahead along Chemin de By. Keep going straight through the woods until you reach a road. At the end, turn left.

(10) After crossing the footbridge over the railway line, turn right then immediately left, continuing straight on through the woods.

(11) At a multi-way junction, cross the old Route de Bourgogne and take the Route du Rocher d’Avon on the right, heading due west, until you reach the Carrefour des Fraillons.

(12) Turn right, 90°, heading due north. Further on, cross the Place de la Gare de Fraillon.

(13) Continue straight on until you reach the Carrefour Duchatel.

(14) Take thesecond road on the left, the Route de la Petite Haie, until you reach the Carrefour de la Petite Haie.

(15) Take thethird road on the right, Route de la Butte de Montceau. Cross the D137 carefully, then continue to the second track on the right.

(16) Turn right onto Chemin de Saint-Aubin. Cross the D138 carefully and continue straight ahead to reach the River Seine.

(17) Take the track on the left and follow the River Seine. Pass the Fontaine Saint-Aubin and a sewage treatment works.

(18) Leave the Seine and turn left, then left again onto the Route du Moulin de la Chaudière.

(19) Cross the D138 carefully and continue straight ahead along the edge of the woodland on your right, then turn right into Rue Jacques Durand. Pass two roundabouts.

(20) At Square de la République, turn left onto Rue de la République, then right at the community centre onto Rue des Yèbles, and you will arrive at Fontainebleau-Avon station (E).

The route has been significantly modified to take into account various passages that have become unusable by pedestrians and to avoid walking along the railway line on the way back, without walking too much on tarmac.

The beautiful old Saint-Mammès Church and a few reproductions of paintings by Alfred Sisley add an undeniable touch of heritage to this walk.
