From Ludres to Chavigny via the Bois de la Grande Fraize

To complete the triptych covering the Ludres plateau (see also Ludres-Houdemont and Ludres-Messein), this circular route mainly covers the commune of Chavigny and takes in the three highlights of the plateau: Camp Leuque, traces of mining activity and a beautiful view of the Vosges mountains.

Description of the walk

Start from the MJC Georges Brassens car park (444 Rue de Secours) in Ludres.

(S/E) Take the path that starts at the end of the car park between the MJC and the pavilions. After crossing the road, continue in the same direction to climb up to the plateau.

(1) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and, after a few metres, take the path on the left that runs along the forest above the meadow. When the path enters the forest, you will cross an earth embankment that marks the beginning of Camp Leuque (Cité d'Affrique). Shortly afterwards, you will reach a bend inthe GRP® Autour de Nancy.

(2) Follow the markings, turning right (steep climb - signposted "Camp d'Affrique"). Cross a wide path at elevation 408 and continue straight ahead.

(3) Shortly after crossing a double deep ditch marking the north-western boundary of Camp Leuque, follow the markings, which change direction several times at right angles.

(4) When you reach elevation 395, leave these markings and head due west on the path that descends into the valley. You will then pass close to an old mine entrance (not visible from the path). Continue along the meadow on the right bank of the stream. The path then approaches the stream, passing between two fences.

(5) At the first houses in Chavigny, turn right. About a hundred metres further on, take the path that climbs up to the right between two fences (and two "Air LIquide" boxes). Reach the top of the plateau.

(6) When you reach a junction, leave the branch that goes right between two markers and turn left. At the next intersection marked by a large marker, go right to join theGRP® Autour de Nancy a little further on. Turn left and follow the markings to the Bagneris forest road. Leave the markings and continue straight ahead between plots 484 and 486.

(7) At the junction (in a hilly area popular with mountain bikers), turn right and then, just before a marker, turn left. At the next junction, turn left and then immediately right. Continue for 200 metres.

(8) At this junction, take a detour to the right onto the path between plots 31 and 32 (you can also continue straight ahead to avoid this detour and rejoin the route at the next intersection). When you reach the power line, follow it to the right for about 100 metres until you reach an intersection marked by a beautiful Napoleonic boundary stone. Turn right and head south-southeast to the foot of a radio tower.

(9) Follow the ditch path that runs along the fence of the tower or a parallel path a few metres to the right. At the intersection with the forest road, cross the barrier on the left and follow the wide fitness trail path south-west. This path borders an old quarry.

(10) Cross the forest road called Chemin Stratégique here to take a section of the Grand Nancy marked route no. 9. Walk past a few buildings that are part of an old mining facility.
Continue south and enjoy the beautiful view of the village of Ludres, east of Nancy, and the Vosges mountains on the horizon. Follow the path as it slowly descends southwards. After passing the remains of an old mining building, turn left onto the path you took on the way there and return to the MJC car park (S/E).

Part of the route can be tricky in wet weather (slippery ground, ruts filled with water).
Walking poles recommended (some steep sections).

A fairly easy walk, with no particular difficulties. Limited scenery, but perfect for a breath of fresh air.

An afternoon stroll that took me along many muddy paths rutted by forestry machinery and mountain bikers...
A word of advice: only do this after a few days without rain!
Almost the entire route is through a forest (or forests) undergoing regeneration and is not very attractive. The few oak trees that remained have just been cut down. The first flowers are appearing.

A pleasant but somewhat monotonous hike, as it is almost exclusively in the forest, but with two beautiful views: at the start over the Moselle valley, and on the way back over Ludres. The crossing of the Leuques camp is interesting, and we would like to know a little more about it. Some sections are a little dirty, as it has been raining recently, but nothing problematic.

A short sunny walk; we didn't do the whole hike because we weren't fit enough. We reached Chavigny and then headed back to Ludres. It goes downhill and then uphill again.

Hello Visorando
I haven't done the downloaded hikes yet, but I regret one thing
the markings for your hikes are not indicated, and I am a beginner
It would be a great help to us. Thank you for considering this. Thank you, FM.

A varied forest trail that makes for a lovely half-day outing. Walking sticks are useful for some of the downhill sections.

Lots of forest (very muddy at this time of year)
Not many signposts
Luckily, we had a visual representation of our position on the app to get us back on track

The route is mainly through forest, so there are few views; however, there is an interesting viewpoint from the heights of Ludres. Avoid this route in wet weather or the day after rain, as there are several very muddy sections combined with ruts caused by forestry machinery... and/or quad bikes.
