Description of the walk

Start from the small car park in Livilliers, Rue de la Chaise, near the church. For access by train and bus, see the ‘Practical Information’ section.

(S/E) Head towards the church and join theGR®1marked in red and white by turning right onto the Sente de l’École. Keep the paths on your right. At the two crossroads, go straight on and cross Bois Lapin.

(1) At the crossroads at the edge of the woods, continue straight ahead. Walk along the right-hand side of the copses without changing direction. Once in the fields, turn left. At the end of the path, turn right.

(2) Pass a yellow-marked path on your left. In the woods, ignore a path on the right. Follow Ruelle de la Vanne to enter Épiais-Rhus.

(3) Cross Rue de Normandie to take Rue des Bruyères. Pass the path on the left, then Rue du Pressoir on the right.

(4) Turn left onto Sente de Butard. Pass a yellow-marked path on the right. The path crosses woods and fields to reach Grisy-les-Plâtres.

(5) Follow Rue Butelle to the left, then turn right onto Rue Robert Machy. Ignore two streets on the right, then turn right after the church onto Rue du Vexin.

(6) Turn left then right into Rue de Berval. Leave Rue de Berval by taking Rue de l’Isle on the left. At the junction, head straight on towards the D22.

(7) First turn right then left to cross this main road with care and join the D64. Follow it very carefully for 2.5 km until you reach the entrance to Bréançon.

(8) Pass Rue des Carmélites on your left and walk past the church along the street of the same name. Continue along Rue de la Liberté.

(9) Leave theGR®1by turning right onto the path that comes immediately after the Fontaine path. Turn right to reach the church in Bréançon.

(10) Cross Rue de l’Eglise at the pedestrian crossing and follow Rue du Moulin to the right, going against the flow of traffic. Pass Rue des Carmélites on your left again and follow the D190 with care. Turn left onto a path marked in yellow through the fields.

(11) Cross the D64 and leave the yellow markings to take a path opposite that veers to the right. When the path disappears in front of a copse, go to the right of it. Further on, the path reappears and enters the woods.

(12) After a viewpoint, head down to the right to perform a first turn left then right, then follow a path on the edge of the woods to the left. Join the D22.

(13) Carefully follow this road to the left. After the cross, take the path on the right which joins Rue Bois Queris. Cross theGR®1then follow Rue Charles de Gaulle. Turn left onto Rue du Vexin and ignore Rue de Berval and Rue des Bouchers.

(6) Continue along Rue du Vexin. After the Stop sign, take the second left, Rue des Maurois. At the corner of the cemetery, turn right onto Sente du Moulin, going against the one-way traffic. Ignore the paths branching off to the left and right. Cross the D64 and follow the yellow-marked path opposite. In front of the cemetery, go straight down Rue des Bruyères.

(4) Leave the Sente de Butard on your right, then take Rue du Pressoir on your left. First turn right then left, then go right behind the church. Go down the steps on the left to Rue Saint-Didier. Go up the street on the right, leaving Rue de l’Église behind.

(3) Cross theGR®1. After the dead-end on the right, follow Chemin de l'Isle to the left. At the Fork in the road, turn left to rejoin the GR®.

(2) Turn right onto theGR®1and let it veer off to the left 100 m further on. Head straight on towards the D22.

(14) Follow it for 50 m to the left to join a path marked in yellow after a barrier.

(15) Leave the path on your left. At the crossroads, turn right onto the Sente de la Mine d'Or. Cross at the pedestrian crossing to reach the Chapelle de Gérocourt on your left.

(16) Turn back to rejoin the Sente de la Mine d'Or. Turn right at the crossroads and follow the yellow markings to the left.

(17) Turn left, then 50 m further on turn right at the edge of the woods and continue to the D79.

(18) Follow it to the left. After 100 m, turn onto the path on the right. Head up to the left at the yellow roof-shaped markers and then follow the path to the left which joins theGR®1.

(19) Turn left. In Livilliers, take Rue du Vaunay towards the church. Go round the left-hand side of the building to reach Rue de la Chaise and the car park (S/E).

A lovely route featuring everything that makes the Vexin special: paths, tracks and trails – some of them quite ‘wild’ – mud, roads, villages and their churches, sheep, horses, hunters, fields, woods and undergrowth… and a beautiful sunrise over the morning frost!
Between points 7 and 8, it’s true that this road isn’t the most pleasant, but it’s wide and not that busy. You need to be careful.
No problem at point 10, it’s passable, apart from a very muddy 5-metre stretch just before it.
After point 11, the path is very grassy but it’s still passable up to halfway towards point 12. The path then disappears and we went along the edge of the field on the left for 200m before finding the path again.
Thanks

Hike completed on 8 June 2024
Point 7: 2.5 km On the D64, it’s long, dangerous and uninteresting.
Currently, between points 11 and 12, the path is impassable unless you have a machete. Brambles and nettles, with vegetation over a metre high. We had to climb back up through the fields before the viewpoint.
Kind regards

The walk began on a cool, misty morning and continued in the sunshine.
On that day, the long stretch along the D64 posed no problems as there was little traffic. Fortunately, as there are no verges.
Difficulties at point 10. The copse must have grown since this route was written. Whilst it is still possible to go round it at the start, scratching yourself a bit on the thorny bushes lining the path, it soon becomes impassable. You then have to go down into the field to skirt the copse and rejoin the path. A little further on, you have to cross a pile of branches blocking the way and finally spot the watchtower under a camouflage net.
For your information, there is a tap at the foot of the church in Epiais-Rhus, currently without water, probably to prevent it freezing, and a bench in the church square.
A typo in point 9: you follow the D190, not the D90.

You can choose to do just part of the walk, as it is very long.
On arrival at Epiais Rhus, follow the circular route in the opposite direction towards Livilliers.
Open countryside, beautiful fields and daisies.
However, it is very little used.

Passing through the pretty villages of the Vexin region, at this time of year and in thick mist, the paths through the fields are very muddy and rather uninteresting. After marker 9 and crossing the D64 at “La Marette”, the path—which appears to follow an old railway line—disappears beneath thick undergrowth, forcing us to descend into ploughed fields; as a result, we cannot see the watchtower mentioned. Thanks to our “rough-and-ready” GPS, we eventually managed to find the route again.
It’s also worth noting that, on that particular day, the sections along the departmental roads were being used by drivers who were driving dangerously.
Well, we’ll do it again in the warmer months, armed with this experience...
Thanks to whoever took the trouble to write the route description.
