Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the foot of Vallangoujard church and along the D64.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Follow the D64 towards Marines. Descend gently, ignore the first road on the right and take the next one, Rue Verte. At the end of the tarmac, continue along a footpath.

(1) At the T-junction, follow a shaded path to the left marked PR® VS3. Cross a stream via a wooden footbridge, then ignore a metal footbridge on the left and continue along the path.

(2) You’ll come out onto a small road; follow it to the left, slightly uphill. At the end, rejoin the D64 and follow it to the right, using the right-hand verge (the left-hand verge is virtually non-existent). Cross the Chemin de la Planche on the right-hand side.

(3) Take the next right, the Chemin du Pont de Pierre. Cross the stream again and continue along a shaded path. At a junction, go straight on.

(4) Pass a gate on the right and continue straight on along a path between the stream on your left and a fenced-off pond on your right.

(5) Cross a footbridge over the stream and, at the T-junction that appears immediately (not shown on the map), turn left. Ignore a path on the left and pass between a ruined house and a small water tower. There are then two parallel paths: take the path on the right, closest to the stream.

(6) After a hairpin bend, you’ll come out onto a small road (with an abandoned factory on the right) and follow it to the left. After about forty metres, turn right onto a path. Walk alongside the stream again on your right.

(7) At a forest gate, turn left and walk alongside a wall on your right. Climb up to a road and follow it to the right (manor house on the right).

(8) At the corner of a small outbuilding of the manor house with a slate roof, there are two options:
- Continue straight on along the road, passing a small triangular clearing on the left, and rejoin the main route at (9).
- As shown on the map and following the on-site markings, turn right onto a grassy path between two walls. Continue downhill along a track and cross a stream (wet crossing). Pass through a gate and close it behind you. At the T-junction, turn left and head uphill along a track.

(9) After a hairpin bend, take a path on the right at a sharp angle. Pass through a forest gate and descend gently between fenced meadows. Follow a stream and a small pond on your right-hand side.

(10) At a crossroads, take the first path on the left, at an acute angle. At the junction that appears shortly afterwards, go straight on and follow a fence on your left. Continue along a path at the edge of a wood, mostly within it. At a T-junction (not shown on the map), turn left. Immediately ignore an access to a field on the left and you will soon reach a fork.

(11) Take the path on the left, stay at the edge of the woodland (ignore the paths branching off to the right) and climb gently. Further on, follow a fence on your right and watch your step as several metal spikes protrude from the ground (likely the remains of old fence posts).

(12) Leave the woods and continue straight on through meadows dotted with fruit trees. Carry on along a wider, gravelly path. Cross the D64 carefully at the entrance to Épiais-Rhus and continue along the path opposite.

No signposting

(13) At a crossroads (cemetery on the right), go straight on down a one-way street. Cross Chemin Butard on the right and immediately reach a crossroads.

Red and white markings

(14) At the junction, continue straight on and downhill (dovecote on the right). At the next junction, continue straight on and downhill into Ruelle de la Vanne (dead end). The tarmac soon gives way to a stony path. Ignore a turn-off on the left and then one on the right.

(15) Shortly afterwards, turn left (south-east) between the fields.

Yellow markings

(16) At the T-junction, turn left and climb gently up a good path. At the end, cross a small road and follow it to the left for a few dozen metres, keeping to the right-hand verge for better visibility.

(17) Take the first path on the right and follow a hedge on your left. Ignore a path on the right, then one on the left (elevation 119) whilst turning right with the PR® VS3.

(18) At the junction shortly afterwards, turn left. At the end of the track, turn right and pass the sheds on the left. Continue straight ahead, rejoin the tarmac further on and cross the hamlet of Mézières.

(19) On leaving the hamlet, at the corner by a riding school, take a path on the left. The path soon gives way to a winding track through dense vegetation. You’ll reach open ground and continue straight on between the fields (north-east). You’ll come out onto a small road and follow it to the right for a good hundred metres.

(20) When the road bends to the right, leave it and take a path on the left that curves sharply (there is a barrier and signs discouraging you from taking another path). Walk alongside a narrow strip of woodland on your left and a field on your right. Ignore a path on the right and you will reach a crossroads in front of a gate.

(21) Then turn left at the hairpin bend. Just before a road, take a path on the right (be careful to spot this turn-off). Walk along the left-hand side of a cemetery wall, then a tennis court. Continue along the path alongside a stream on the right-hand side.

(22) Then turn right and head uphill along a path interspersed with steps. At the end of the path (fountain), turn left and walk past the entrance to Vallangoujard church. At the fork immediately ahead, take either the right-left route (marked on the map) or the left-right route to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are recommended.

Water point at the end of the walk, just before the church at Vallangoujard, between (22) and (S/E). Opposite the start car park (S/E), there is a bar but it appears to be permanently closed (bar not listed in the Yellow Pages).

For the most part, the route follows the PR® VS3 trail designed and signposted by the Val-d'Oise departmental committee of the FFR.

A detailed map is useful (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

A very beautiful route with varied scenery. Especially with the encounter with a beautiful, very affectionate black horse. Thank you to those who mapped out this route.

A beautiful, easy hike.
it looks like the stakes in the ground have been removed. We didn't see them on our last visit.
Very good for safety! 👍
