Park in the free car park at Fort des Dunes (War Museum) in Leffrinckoucke (Rue du Fort), next to the stadium.
(S/E) Take the tarmac path ahead, heading towards the dunes.
Cross the old railway line and head north towards the beach, through the dunes via Chemin de la Batterie.
At the junction of paths 32, 31 and 28, continue straight on to the blockhouses.
(1) Once there, take the small path between blockhouses L12 and L13 and climb slightly. Follow a steep path (take care) up to the top of the dune, then descend to Leffrinckoucke beach.
On the beach, turn left towards the port of Dunkirk, visible in the distance. Stay on the beach until you reach the Grand Pavois buildings and follow the sea wall.
Walk along the sea wall past the cafés and restaurants until you reach the end.
(2) Before taking the footbridge over the Exutoire Canal, treat yourself to a return trip along the jetty, directly to the right. It leads ‘out to sea’, keeping your feet dry.
(3) Retrace your steps.
(2) This time, take the Canal Exutoire footbridge leading to the FRAC (Regional Contemporary Art Fund). You’ll arrive at the Esplanade Georges Cavrois. Head towards Port de Plaisance / Calvaire des Marins.
Go round the museum on the right, then take Rue Louis Evrard to the Marina. The museum will be on the left, with boats on the slipway on the right.
Walk past the marina and the sailing centre.
(4) Turn right, towards the restaurant Le Grand Large. Go round the restaurant and turn left. At the end of this street, turn right onto Rue des Islandais, then take the first right again and follow the shared cycle/pedestrian path, Avenue des Bordées, which leads back towards the harbour.
100 m further on, follow the gravel path, slightly to the right.
At the very end, turn left towards Dunkirk town centre. Views of: the belfry, the Leughenaer Tower, the town hall and its bell tower.
(5) At the end of the quay, turn left onto Rue du Cabestan (poorly signposted).
At the end of this street, turn slightly left onto Rue Ferdinand Buisson (also poorly signposted). At the end of Rue Ferdinand Buisson, turn right and then immediately left. Take Avenue des Bordées, which you have already used, on the right. Continue along Rue des Chantiers de France (you can visit the Operation Dynamo museum – the evacuation of British troops depicted by Christopher Nolan in his film Dunkirk).
(6) Cross the Pont Lucien Lefol, near the LAAC (contemporary art museum). Continue for several hundred metres along Place Paul Asseman, towards the Kursaal (exhibition and conference centre).
(7) At the Kursaal, continue straight on towards Avenue About and its old Saint-Malo houses.
(8) Turn left towards the sea and head for the Malo sea dyke. Turn right and head straight on, either along the dyke or along the beach, as far as Leffrinckoucke.
(1) At the blockhouses, retrace your steps along the Chemin de la Batterie through the heart of the dunes. Head for the Fort des Dunes car park (S/E).
