Dunkirk - Bergues

After Dunkirk, theGR® 120 takes a detour inland. Once out of Dunkirk, the route passes peacefully through the Bois des Forts and reaches the pretty fortified town of Bergues with its canals and medieval ruins.
The stage is fairly short, leaving plenty of time to wander around Bergues.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The coastal path from Bray-Dunes to Étaples

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Saint-Éloi belfry, take Rue de l’Amiral Ronarc’h until you reach the headquarters of the Urban Community. Turn left and follow Rue des Fusiliers Marins. Further on, continue in the same direction along Rue de l’Écluse de Bergues.

(1) When you reach the canal, do not cross it but turn left to walk alongside it via Quai aux Bois. Pass in front of a temple and arrive at a footbridge (Passerelle de la Douane). Turn right and cross the canal, then immediately turn left into a small car park which leads onto a path running alongside the canal. Join Rue de Paris, turn left and continue along the canal to reach Pont Saint-Charles.

(2) Cross the bridge and, immediately afterwards, turn right and follow a cycle path. After the electricity substation, turn left and follow a canal. The path continues along Rue Béranger. Follow this street, cross a railway line, enter Coudekerque-Branche and continue in the same direction along Rue Ledru-Rollin. You will reach the outskirts of Coudekerque.

(3) Before the roundabout, keep to the right and take a path that turns right and runs alongside the motorway. At the junction with a road, turn left, go under the motorway and take the first right. After a few metres, turn left into a footpath between two hedges. Join a street and follow it in the same direction. Leave the street just as it turns left and continue straight on via a passage leading to a car park.

(4) Continue straight ahead along the Bois des Forts footpath (Allée du Boernhold). Cross a side path. At the next junction, turn left onto Allée des Alouettes. Pass behind a row of anti-aircraft battery bunkers under a power line.

(5) Just past the bunkers, cross the RD2 and take Allée de la Pépinière opposite. Further on, pass Allée du Fort Vallières on your right. The path runs alongside a power line, then turns right and joins a small road leading to Coudekerque-Village.

(6) Cross the road and take Allée des Mésanges opposite, slightly to the left. Then turn right into Allée des Pics-Verts.

(7) Cross Allée du Relais des Forts and continue along Allée des Loriots. At the next junction, turn right onto Allée des Bergeronnettes. It bends left twice and runs alongside a pond. At the crossroads, take the footbridge on the right

(8) Just after the footbridge, turn right again (Allée des Ramiers). Further on, take a footbridge on the right and you’ll reach a car park.

(9) Cross the car park and take Allée de Bergues opposite. It eventually approaches the Bergues Canal and leads onto a road. Take the first turn: take the road to the right and back, then take the path along the canal by turning left and heading south-east again. Cross the first moat and arrive at a car park with benches and tables.

(10) Leave the tarmac track and turn left, without crossing the second moat, onto a path that runs alongside the moats and ramparts. It leads to a car park. Turn right and go through the Porte aux Boules. Follow Avenue Vauban, which turns left, crosses a canal and joins the RD3.

(11) Pass the Porte de Honschoote on your right and take a path on the other side of the RD3 which descends and runs alongside the ramparts. You’ll reach a street. Cross it and take a stone staircase on your left opposite.

(12) After a few steps, take the earthen staircase on the left which climbs the ramparts. The path turns right twice and joins a street. Turn left into it.

(13) Before the street turns right, head right into a park. Walk to the square tower, go round it to the right, then head back down towards a gate. Enter the old town and walk down Rue des Annonciades and then Rue Léon Claeys, until you reach Place de la République where the Belfry is located (E).

We travelled from Bergues station to Dunkirk station. We returned by train.
This route has two parts: the first (Bergues and the Fort Woods) was brilliant, very enjoyable.
The second, in town, was of little interest and even a bit tedious.
Wouldn’t it be possible to find a more ‘touristy’ route starting from Coudekerque? Perhaps heading back along the Bergues Canal rather than the Moëres Canal???
