Between dunes, beaches, the sea wall and the cycle route north of the North

A wonderful hike of around fifteen kilometres through the heart of the dunes, protected areas, and along the most beautiful beaches of the North.

Description of the walk

Meet at the Leffrinckoucke Dunes Fort, Rue du Fort, near the stadium. Large free car park available.

(S/E): Follow the footpath for 100 m towards the dunes and the beach.
At the railway line, there are two options:
- option 1: do not cross the railway line; instead, take the cycle route on your right to reach Zuydcoote,
- option 2: cross the railway line and take the sandy paths through the Dewulf dunes to also reach Zuydcoote; this is more picturesque but also much more tiring. Please note, there are no signposts.

(1) Take a moment to admire the architecture of the Nord farm on your right and the former sanatorium, now known as the maritime hospital, on your left.

(2) Before the Collège du Septentrion, turn left to reach the centre of Bray-Dunes.

(3) Leave the D947 at the bend and take the road on the left; turn into Rue du Large to reach the sea wall.

(4) Follow the sea wall to the left and continue along it until it ends.
Note: At low tide, head down to the beach; at high tide, take the paths through the dunes – there are still no signposts.
Continue along the sand, pass the row of blockhouses and, after the maritime hospital, reach the junction with theGR®120.

(5) Take this path, walking alongside the blockhouses once more, past the Leffrinckoucke battery. Take the red-brick boat access to reach the Leffrinckoucke sea wall. Turn right onto the sea wall and follow it back up to reach the water sports centre.

(6) Take the road on the left, Avenue Émile Loubet, which crosses the dunes towards Dunkirk Centre. Join the cycle route before the railway line.

(7) Follow it to the left to easily reach the car park at Fort des Dunes de Leffrinckoucke (S/E).

Worth a visit

Avant (4) For a gourmet break in Bray-Dunes, I recommend the fine-dining restaurant Au fil de l'eau, but you must book several weeks in advance. It is located just before the sea wall.
The protected areas of the Marchand and Dewulf dunes, the flora and fauna, the former Zuydcoote sanatorium (now a maritime hospital), the Nord farm, theSecond World War blockhouses, and the temporary art installations on the blockhouses.

Hello

Thank you for this route; there were very few people out on a lovely Monday in February, during the school holidays.

I am, however, rather surprised by certain parts of the route:
- why continue along a road after the dune factory when there’s a lovely path, notably the GR 120, that lets you avoid the tarmac?
- and, in the same vein, to avoid the tarmac, from the GR 120 you can head north to reach the beach, bypassing a whole section of very limited interest. Of course, you walk further in the sand of the dunes, but the path is much prettier, even if it is a little longer.

A lovely walk thanks to the variety of terrain (sand, footpaths, cycle paths, beach, urban areas).
At point 2, it’s impossible to follow the D947 as it crosses over on a bridge; continue towards Avenue du Général de Gaulle or, as I did, cross the Marchand dunes to reach the sea.

There are few or no signposts, but it doesn’t matter because with all the possible paths through the dunes, you always end up finding your way... Please note: at high tide, you must go round the Leffrinckoucke battery via paths that you’ll need to discover for yourself.
