From Landrethun-le-Nord to Caffiers via the Stinkal quarries

A very nice walk, with no difficulties, through fields, a stretch of forest, the Bois de Beaulieu, where there used to be an abbey, and the discovery of the Stinkal quarry site: very careful during the week when there is a lot of lorry traffic. Unfortunately, you used to be able to take a small path along the railway line, which you took on the site of the quarries. Access to this path is now strictly forbidden, which means that you have to finish your walk on the tarmac from the quarries. This in no way detracts from the charm of the start of the walk.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the Landrethun-le-Nord church.

(S/E) Cross the road to the church pavement. Drive around the small roundabout to the right, carefully crossing the Rue du 8 Mai 1945, and go straight on, Rue Saint-Martin.

(1) Take the small path on the right and immediately the one on the left that runs alongside the garden: both lead to the main road. Cross the road with great care and take the track opposite through the fields. At the end of the track, turn left.

(2) Turn right quickly to go through the tunnel under the railway line, take the left-hand path and follow it. At the end of the track, continue straight ahead on the small road.

(3) Just after the small bend, take the small climb to the right, south-east, and cross the footbridge over the railway line. Keep going straight ahead, staying on the track, and you will come to a small housing estate. At the end of the road, at the crossroads, turn left and follow the road for a good hundred metres.

(4) Just before the stop sign, turn right onto the track that crosses the fields.

(5) When you reach the bottom, don't go straight on: there's a barrier, it's the quarry site. Take the track on the right, at the bend in the road where there is a sort of unauthorised rubbish dump. Follow the path through the former Bois de Beaulieu.

(6) Go past a building on the left. A tower from the old abbey can be seen in the vegetation at the level of the building, but closer to the path, it seems to me, covered in vegetation. It really is an old ruin that's hard to spot!

(7) Cross the level crossing very carefully: be careful, there are lots of trains during the week, and it's very dusty. Continue along the road, taking great care during the week when there are lots of lorries and construction machinery. Continue straight on until you reach the junction with the RD231.

(8) Turn right and drive carefully along the road, which has a pavement on both sides. Pass the small supermarket on your left and continue along the road past the bend. There is always a pavement.

(9) On the left, you will see a small fishing pond where you can take a pleasant break: there are games for children and picnic tables. Leave the first road on the left, after the pond.

(10) Cross it carefully and take the second road up to the roundabout, where you will find the church and car park (S/E).

Practical information

A very pleasant walk, with no difficulties.

The quarry site is very interesting to explore, you can see the extraction pit from a distance, but you need to be very careful during the week, as there is a lot of dust and construction machinery passing by.

You can take a break in the small park with the pond at Landrethun (9), although you'll soon reach the car park.
