From the Reculée du Pissoux to the Montbeliardot Arboretum

Discover the Reculée du Pissoux and its stream, the Dessoubre Valley and its river, passing by the Moulin de Girardot. A lovely climb up to the Roche du Miroir, which offers a panoramic view, then a walk through the village of Plaimbois-du-Miroir and back via the Montbeliardot Arboretum and its sculptures. A hike through wild, lush countryside.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park 400 m after Moulin du Bois along the D 20 coming from Monbéliardot.

(S/E) From the car park, head to the crossroads. Signpost: Saut du Pissoux 0.9 km. Take the small path that descends to the signpost on the right. Arrive at Saut du Pissoux.

(1) Take care: from here, the descent into the Reculée du Pissoux may be slippery in places. Follow the stream to the right. Cross a road at elevation 643. Follow a path slightly to the left and descend, following yellow/blue markings on a tree.

(2) Leave the path and turn right onto a wider track for 300 m. At the signpost, take the path on the left, cross a small wooden bridge further on, follow the Pissoux and reach a junction.

(3) At the signpost, follow the signs for Moulin Girardot. Turn right, then left 100 m further on. You will reach a junction.

(4) Continue to the right, walk a few metres and take the path on the left which descends to the D39 road. Yellow/blue markings on a tree. Follow the road to the right and walk alongside the Dessoubre to the bridge at the entrance to the village of Gigot, passing by the Moulin de Girardot.

(5) At the signpost, follow the direction of Le Val. Take the path on the right, without crossing the Dessoubre, and arrive at the Moulin de Belvoir. “Option to make a return trip by walking down to the foot of the dam for a better view.” Continue following the Dessoubre to Le Val, which is a street in the village of Bretonvillers. Do not cross the bridge.

(6) After the first house, turn right through a gap in the fence. At the signpost, follow the direction of Plaimbois-du-Miroir. Climb for about 400 m. In the pasture, keep to the right and follow the fence uphill.

(7) Cross via an ascending path, using a gap in the fence. At the next junction, take the path opposite until you reach another junction. At the signpost, follow the direction of Plaimbois-du-Miroir.

(8) When you reach a track, turn right; there is a signpost on a rock opposite. Walk 5 to 10 m and turn left onto the path, marked on a rock. Climb up, and when you reach a track, take the left-hand track, then the next track on the right. Do not continue along the main path: take the path that goes downhill and, at the first bend, take the path on the right (partly overgrown) to join a lovely path about 200 m further on.

(9) Once on the path, turn right then left at the junction, staying on this lovely path.
This section of the path is not obvious: do not go downhill; keep to the right whilst climbing. At the foot of the path, there is a signpost.

(10) Climb up, turn right towards the Roche du Miroir viewpoint, where you can admire the Dessoubre valley and Laval-le-Prieuré. Retrace your steps and turn right (picnic table).

(11) Head towards the village of Plaimbois-du-Miroir and cross it along the main road via Rue du Miroir, passing the town hall and the church. On leaving the village, turn left.

(12) In the pasture, head up to the right to follow the ridge along the path through the woods until you reach a junction.

(13) With the pasture on your left, take the path on the right that goes downhill, walk a few metres and take the path on the right that descends steeply in a hairpin bend. Go to the exit of the pasture, cross the road and take the path opposite. You will reach another road (D128).

(14) Cross this and turn right. Walk 20 m and take a path that descends to the left, leading to a small gully. Take the path into the pasture. Walk to the far end of the pasture to cross a gap, reach another path, then turn left. Reach a crossroads.

(15) At the signpost, follow the direction of the arboretum. Take the path on the right before the next road junction. You will arrive at the arboretum (sculptures, tables and viewpoint).

(16) At the signpost, follow the direction of Montbéliardot. At the next junction, continue straight ahead along the path. At the signpost, follow the direction of Montbéliardot. At the next junction, go straight ahead. At the signpost, follow the direction of Moulin du Bois. Further on, enter a small pasture, keeping to the right. The path continues.

(17) At the entrance to the pasture, head straight ahead keeping to the right; there is a hedge and a signpost. Continue to the start of a path and take it. At the signpost, follow the direction of Moulin du Bois. Continue to the right. Join the road, take the path straight ahead over the dam, then turn right onto the track, and head to the car park (S/E).

Just before arriving at the village of Montbéliardot, a new option seems to have been added: leave the proposed route by turning right onto the small ladder spanning the fence. After that? I didn't follow this proposed route, but the distance indicated is roughly the same as the initial route I followed.

Following our recent trip to the Haut-Doubs, we revisited the route we’d started but hadn’t completed in August 2023.
We started it in Gigot again this time. A few additional comments:
The climb up the Reculée du Pissoux, especially after the waterfall, is particularly difficult: the path is often rutted (thanks to the mountain bikes!) and slippery.
The descent between points 6 and 9 is “hard on the knees”; it is very steep, rugged and relatively long.
The path between points 15 and 17, although a bit long, is nonetheless charming as you make your way, sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left, along a sort of stone wall.

A lovely, shaded walk.
We also started the hike at Gigot, as suggested by other hikers, and took the fairly steep, stony forest track running parallel to the Dessoubre to reach the Moulin de Girardot, in order to avoid the busy road.
We had a real struggle further on, as deep ruts caused by recent rain and logging work slowed our progress considerably.
The climb up the Le Pissoux stream – dry in places – was justified given the very wet and slippery slope.
Due to the delay at the start of the hike, we shortened it by taking the path towards La Seigne between points 16 and 17 to reach La Roche du Miroir and head back towards Gigot.

As for me, we started the hike at point (5) Gigot, following the route in the correct direction. We therefore tackled the climb in the cool of the morning, setting off at 11.00 am and arriving at the viewpoint for our picnic. The descent from the Pissoux valley went smoothly despite a few thunderstorms in the preceding days. The only drawback: the stretch of road between waypoints 4 and 5
This hike is very pleasant, with varied landscapes and vegetation and some lovely points of interest.
Highly recommended!

A truly beautiful walk, and a very pleasant one in warm weather, offering the chance to enjoy a wide variety of landscapes: from the wooded ridges between Montbéliardot and Plaimbois du Mirroir to the lush vegetation of the Pissoux valley floor, all the way to the Saut du Pissoux, passing through the charming village of Plaimbois du Mirroir in the Haut-Doubs region. and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys.
However, having led this hike with 16 experienced hikers and having previously scouted the tricky section at the Saut du Pissoux on my own, the route described is not the most suitable, given the rather tricky, even dangerous, descent from the top of the Saut du Pissoux, which is why a chain is in place.
Following this reconnaissance and given the limestone terrain, which is slippery in damp weather or after rainfall, we undertook the hike in the opposite direction, starting from Gigot. It is worth noting that the Pissoux valley is a regularly damp area and therefore slippery in places, which explains the lush vegetation. Starting from Gigot also offers two other advantages: the chance to have a picnic at the arboretum above Montbéliardot (an area equipped with sheltered tables and benches) and the opportunity to enjoy a beer at the end of the hike at the hotel-restaurant in Gigot!!!
A suggestion: between waypoints 4 and 5, the route follows a roadside path that is quite busy, particularly at weekends. Instead, we took the signposted path which starts on the right after the bridge over the Reverotte (signposted towards the Girardot mill) at Gigot; it climbs and winds along the Parfondbief hillside before descending towards the Girardot mill, saving you 2.00 km of road walking.
Kind regards
