From Kerlic to the old Kerrous quarry

From the Kerlic health centre, theGR®38 takes us through part of the Stangala woods to the banks of the Odet, where a new footbridge has been installed.
This provides access to the site of the former Kerrous aggregate quarry, which has been redeveloped as a walking area with deciduous trees. A small viewing point overlooks the extraction pit, which has been converted into a drinking water reservoir.
A short walk on the outskirts of Quimper.

Description of the walk

Park at the car park of the Kerlic Eye Centre (blue building).
Access by bus: Kerlic line (terminus).

(S/E) Leave the car park, go round the building and, at the roundabout, turn left towards the bus stop. Continue along the wide pavement to the start ofthe GR®38.

GR®38 red and white markings

(1) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and join the new section of the GR® which passes through a wetland area, requiring a boardwalk to be installed in one spot. Continue along this path until you reach the eye clinic. Turn left onto a lovely lane lined with old oak trees and follow this path until it joins a small road. Follow it to the left until you reach the nearby Kerlic car park.

(2) Near the information board about the Stangala Valley, head into the woods and follow the wide path which descends steadily to reach the new footbridge over the Odet (November 2011).

No signposting

Leave theGR® trail along the river, cross this footbridge and continue along the wide, compacted path to reach the site of the former Kerrous quarry, which has recently been converted into a walking area between wetlands and deciduous woodland. Continue straight ahead then turn right to get as close as possible to the river. Keep going, keeping to the left, to reach the Kerrous car park (information board and picnic tables).

(3) With your back to the car park, follow the wide path that climbs towards the quarry pit, which is now a drinking water reservoir. You’ll come to a small wooden viewing platform on the right, offering a view of the reservoir.

(4) Continue for about a hundred metres and turn left onto the path to descend onto the wide track you took on the way out. Follow it to the right to reach the Kerrous footbridge. At the end of the footbridge, rejoining theGR®38, head up to the left to the Kerlic car park.

(2) Turn left onto the small road and, at the T-junction, turn right to reach the eye centre and its car park (S/E).

A lovely little walk in the countryside just outside Quimper: at this time of year, there are plenty of wildflowers to admire, such as bluebells, chickweed and others.

A circular, interesting walk that’s great for children; the first part takes you through the new Kerlic area, where the future clinic is to be built, whilst the second part is much more rural. Well worth a visit if you’re in the Quimper area.

There were quite a few walkers out on this January Sunday (the weather was perfect). The path down to the Odet is best avoided in wet weather; there’s a very nice footbridge – a recent addition, perhaps? – over the Odet. However, the Stangala route along the Odet, starting from the Kerlic car park, was far too wet (it had rained earlier and it is winter, after all).
