Parking at Place Bodart in front of the school in Falmignoul.
(S/E) With your back to the N95, and the school on your left, head towards the willow tree. Cross the small bridge. Cross the road carefully and head up the road opposite. Then turn left towards the church (Rue des Crétias). Ignore the roads coming from the right or left and follow the street up to the chapel.
(1) Turn left, then left again at the first junction, and then right at the next one. Walk alongside cultivated fields and meadows. Ignore the road coming from the left and head further into the forest until you eventually come to another path.
(2) Follow it to the left. This is a tricky descent.
(3) At the bottom, turn right and head downhill, keeping the stream on your left. Wade across the stream. Further down, ignore the path branching off to your left and wade across the stream asecond time. Continue downhill. The path coming from the left takes you to the foot of the small waterfalls if you wish to see them up close. Then retrace your steps to complete the descent to the banks of the Meuse.
(4) Turn right and walk for 400 m.
(5) Turn off onto the path on your right. Be careful and listen out for the sound of the stream, as the vegetation may mean you cannot see either the start of the path or the stream itself. The trampled grass near the entrance can also be a good indicator. Follow this very wild and steep path uphill. At the top, turn left. A series of challenging ascents and descents follow. At the Fork in the road, turn left to reach a wider path.
(6) Follow it to the left. At the next Fork in the road, turn right and continue down towards the Meuse. Turn right and follow the river until you reach the fence around the meadow.
(7) Before the fence, turn right and follow the barbed wire fence to the corner of the meadow. There, in the woodland, you’ll see the steep path ahead leading up to the ruins of Château Thierry. At the very top, when you reach another path, turn left. The ruins come into view a little further on. Climb up through the ruins to reach the upper part of the castle. On the upper path, turn right. Walk alongside the meadow on your left and follow theGR®® markings so as not to miss the viewpoints. A first viewpoint over the Meuse comes into view on your right, followed by asecond, and finally the Drapeau viewpoint, which requires a short round trip.
(8) Carry on along the path, still skirting the meadow, until you eventually reach a wider path.
(9) Turn left and leave the woodland. Walk up between the meadows until you reach the farm track.
(10) Turn right. At the next junction, turn left to arrive in front of the chapel.
(1) Turn right. Head back down to the car park (S/E) via the same route you took on the way up.
After the climb, however, the trail returns to normal, and it wouldn't take much to keep it in good condition...
