From Chantilly to Borest via Senlis through the Massif des Trois-Forêts

Eleventh stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, connecting Chantilly-Gouvieux station to the village of Borest, reached by crossing the Chantilly estate, the Chantilly and Ermenonville forests, with a detour through the historic centre of Senlis and, optionally, a moment of reflection in front of the memorial to the victims of the March 1974 plane crash. The route follows, more or less closely, the Nonette River, which is crossed several times. The route for this stage is almost entirely in the forest, with little elevation gain, making it a very pleasant hike, and the crossings of Chantilly and Senlis add a rich touch of heritage. This stage requires an overnight stay to avoid laborious car manoeuvres. It is therefore the first of two consecutive stages, both entirely within the Oise department, between the Chantilly-Gouvieux and Crépy-en-Valois railway stations.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour de l'Île-de-France par le GR®11

Description of the walk

Access: Chantilly-Gouvieux station on the Paris-Lille line, served by the RER D and TER Hauts de France trains.

(S) Turn left when leaving Chantilly station. Follow the railway line to Rue de Gouvieux. Follow it to the right towards the town centre. Take Rue de Paris on the left. After about 100 metres, cross Place Omer Vallon to the right, then turn left into Rue de la Machine and go downhill. At the bottom, turn right, pass in front of the Pavillon de Manse and arrive at an intersection.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(1) Follow a path on the left along a small canal on your left. After about 100 metres, turn right and follow a wider perpendicular canal, still on your left (red and white GR®11 markings). At the end, follow the D924 (Route de Senlis) to the right. You will arrive at a three-way junction opposite the Grandes Écuries (Horse Museum).

(2) Then follow Rue du Connétable to the left. Pass through the Saint-Denis gate and continue along a path parallel to the road, on its right-hand side (racecourse on the right). Further on, rejoin the road and follow it to the right. After about fifty metres, turn left and you will immediately reach the gate of the Château de Chantilly.

(3) Turn right and walk between a lake on your left and a car park on your right. Enter the forest and walk along the wall of the Domaine de Chantilly on your left. Continue in this direction until you reach the Porte Vaillant gate, about 2 km away.

(4) Turn right onto Chemin de la Porte du Rond (ignore Allée des Sapins on the left) and walk through a residential area. Cross the D138e and you will immediately reach another crossroads.

(5) Take Chemin des Vaches on the right and enter the forest. Follow the curve to the left of the path, then the one to the right. Pass Poteau de l'Entonnoir and carefully cross Route des Vieilles Garennes (potential passage of galloping horses). Take Route du Chêne Pouilleux on the left and follow it to its end.

(6) Take the Chaussée Brunehaut on the left, towards Senlis. Pass the equestrian facilities.

(7) Then turn left. Take the first path on the right. Join a wider path and make the first turn right then left. Join a small road and pass between a water treatment plant on the left and an equestrian centre on the right.

(8) Take the first path on the left and walk alongside the allotments. Further on, continue along the tarmac road and walk alongside a residential area. At a fork, keep left. At the next crossroads, turn left onto Chemin du Roy and cross the Nonette.

(9) Shortly afterwards, take Rue de la Fontaine des Arènes on the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads. Cross Boulevard du Montauban on the left and Boulevard des Otages on the right, and continue straight ahead (leaving the GR® trail on your left).

Route through the centre of Senlis outside the GR® (not marked)

(10) Take the first right, Rue de Beauvais. Pass the Church of Saint-Aignan and you will soon reach Senlis Town Hall.

(11) Turn left onto Rue du Chatel. Take the first right, Rue de la Tonnellerie, then the first left, Rue du Petit Chaillis.

(12) Turn left onto Rue Sainte-Prothaise. At the end, rejoin Rue du Châtel and follow it to the right until you reach the cathedral forecourt.

(13) Enter the Royal Castle grounds on the left for a stroll.

(14) Retrace your steps.

(13) Walk along the cathedral on your left and immediately turn right.

(12) Turn left onto Rue du Chancelier Guérin. Take the second right, Rue Saint-Hilaire. Walk past the side of Saint-Frambourg Church.

(15) At the crossroads that immediately follows, take the second left, Rue Odent. At the end, turn left onto Rue de la République, then right onto Rue des Bordeaux. At the end, follow Rue Saint-Yves à l'Argent to the left. At the end, turn right onto Rue Bellon and you will immediately reach a crossroads.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(16) Take the footpath on the right that runs alongside the Rempart de l'Escalade (follow the red and white markings). Before a sharp right turn, go down the steps on the right. Join Rue de Meaux, follow it to the left and pass under the Porte de Meaux. Continue straight ahead and cross a branch of the Nonette. Pass a triangular crossroads on the left and cross a second branch of the Nonette. Follow Rue du Vieux Chemin de Meaux straight ahead.

(17) After the last houses, turn right onto a field path. At the crossroads (elevation 63), go straight ahead towards the forest. Enter the forest and continue straight ahead for about 500 metres.

(18) Turn left (east-southeast). Cross Chemin des Vaches. At the next crossroads, turn right. At the T-junction, turn left. Pass under the A1 motorway and you will soon reach the car park at Poteau de la Victoire.

(19) Take the second right, a forest road that climbs in a south-easterly direction. At Carrefour des Moines, turn right (south). Cross Route Neuve and arrive at Carrefour de l'Écureuil.

(20) Then turn left (east-southeast). At Poteau des Vaches, turn right (southeast) onto Route des Pots. Continue straight ahead until you reach Carrefour de la Grande Fourchette.

(21) Then take the second right, Chemin des Châtaigniers. At the next crossroads, turn left. Stay on the main marked path, which undulates, and ignore all the side paths. You will come out onto a tarmac road, La Longue Route.

(22) There are two options here:
- If you wish to avoid the detour to the 1974 plane crash memorial, continue straight ahead on the GR®11 and rejoin the main route at (25). This will shorten the hike by approximately 2.5 km.
- Otherwise, as shown on the map, follow the road to the right for about 500 m.

(23) Continue straight ahead on the tarmac road. At the Baraque Chaalis crossroads, take the third right towards the memorial. At the Poteau du Bosquet de Dammartin, continue straight ahead for about 150 m. You will then find the memorial on your left.

(24) Retrace your steps. At the Baraque de Chaalis crossroads, follow the tarmac road to the left.

(23) After about 250 metres, turn onto the first path on the right. Continue straight ahead, heading north-east then east-north-east. Descend and you will come to a crossroads.

(25) Turn right and follow the GR®11 (red and white markings) again. Cross the D126 carefully and continue on the path opposite.

(26) You will come to a tarmac road, the Vielle Route, and follow it to the left. Further on, cross the N330 carefully and continue along the path opposite.

(27) At the end (Château de Chaalis opposite), follow a road to the left and walk along the park wall. At the next crossroads (elevation 68), continue straight ahead (leaving the GR® trail to the right).

No markings

(28) After about 600 m, take the first forest path on the left. Turn immediately right into the woods. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead. Cross the D126 carefully and continue on the path opposite. Go straight ahead (north).

(29) At the crossroads, turn left and follow a stream on your right. Cross the Nonette again and follow Rue du Pont Saint-Martin. At the end, turn right onto Rue des Fours à Chaux. Take the first left and you will reach Place du Tisart (E).

Notes

(S) Chantilly-Gouvieux station, served by the RER D and TER Hauts-de-France trains (please note that fares outside the Île-de-France region apply even on the RER D). There are 1 to 3 trains per hour from Paris-Nord, including both RER and TER trains. Please check the timetables on transilien.com.

(E) Place du Tisard in Borest. Overnight stay recommended. La Maison Prieuré* offers a lodge and guest rooms. Alternative accommodation is available in the surrounding area, particularly in Senlis and Ermenonville, but this will require adjusting the duration and mileage of the stages concerned.

This is a long stage of over 30 km. Although it is only the first part of a long stage between two stations, it may be possible to split it in two at Senlis (in which case you could take the opportunity to spend some time there, for example on a guided tour of the town centre).

Hike completed on 2 November 2024 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
