(8) At the crossroads, turn left. On leaving the hamlet, at a Fork in the road, take the path on the right. Walk down into the hollow of a small valley, ignore a path branching off to the left, and head back up. After a left-hand bend, pass under a high-voltage power line. At the T-junction, turn left.

(9) At the next junction, turn right. At a Fork in the road, veer left. At the next junction, go straight on and walk past the small churchyard. At the end, join the D836 on the right and follow it to the left for about a hundred metres.

(10) At the junction, turn left and cross the Joos. Stay on the tarmac, pass the cemetery and follow the river. At the fork in the road, take the right-hand branch. Join the D59 and follow it to the right until you reach another Fork in the road (cross).

(11) Turn left. Pass through the hamlet of Charbonnel.

A lovely walk – long (24 km), but easy as there’s not much of a climb. The only downside is that there’s a bit too much tarmac in the middle, between Geronce and Aren.

A lovely walk that (partly) takes you off the beaten track of the GR 78. The descriptions (high-voltage power lines, cemeteries, county roads) are a great help in this maze once you leave the comfort of the GR’s signposting. The GPS route is still useful. The section between Géronce and the return to the GR (in the commune of Aren?) struck me as a bit long and perhaps less interesting than the part of the GR that passes through the very pretty commune of Préchacq-Josbaig. But finding a new route by navigating from one point in the description to another remains great fun. It’s worth noting that this walk connects two sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie in Oloron and the Church of the Hôpital Saint Blaise.
A lovely walk, best avoided during periods of extreme heat, unless you set off very early in the morning.
Thank you for this original route
