Enter Ascain and cross the village via Rue Ernest Fourneau. Just before the fronton square, turn left onto the small street that runs along the back of the fronton. At the bottom of this street, continue straight ahead to the Chourio fronton car park.
(S/E) Leave the car park and take the street that goes up to the left to the Arrayoa guest house.
(1) Opposite you, take the path that runs alongside the guest house on the right
Cross a cattle grid and then two streams, either by fording them or using the planks. The path turns sharply to the left. Leave it shortly afterwards and turn right towards the Martinhaurrenborda sheepfold.
(2) Take the track that climbs to the right towards the Jubilee cross
(3) Continue along the track and walk alongside the Basque pig pens until you reach the pigsty at the foot of Suhalmendi
(4) Then take the path that branches off to the right, running alongside the pigsty.
(5) Ignore the path that climbs to the left towards Suhalmendi and continue to the right on this path, which is marked by posts decorated with a pig's head.
(6) Cross the car park and climb up to the farm via the road in front of you.
(7) Pass to the left of the Nausiendorda farm. The path climbs fairly directly towards the summit of Esnaur (beautiful view over the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz).
(8) Turn right (east-northeast) towards the path that runs horizontally halfway up the slope. Take this path to the left. Descend towards the village, ignoring the paths on the right.
(1) Turn left and follow the path you took on the way up back to the car park (S/E).
prevented us from doing everything we wanted to do, but we found the region surprising and very exotic. Despite the low altitudes, these are not hills but real mountains. We have very fond memories, particularly of the trail between the Col d'Ispeguy and Elhorriko Kaskoa, the Arzu Portu trail, and the Iraty massif.
