Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the car park of the old Condé-en-Brie station. Take the D4 towards Baulne-en-Brie, heading up the main street of Condé-en-Brie. You’ll pass the entrance to the Château. Walk to the wash house.

(1) Go round the back of the wash house, follow the edge of the cemetery to the footpath that climbs up the hillside. This is theGR®14or theGRP® Tour de l’Omois (alternative route). Follow the path without changing direction until you reach the D4.

(2) Cross the D4 and head towards the church at Baulne-en-Brie (a moving memorial).

(3) Retrace your steps back to the D4.

(2) Walk 40 metres to the left and take the path branching off to the right (GR® de Pays, yellow and red markings). Cross a small road and continue straight ahead on the path. Pass close to the small road again, but stay on the path.

(4) Turn right (west-north-west) onto the path lined with tall trees (do not continue south-south-east towards the woods).

(5) Near the Montbaillon farm, take the small road to the left and follow it to the village of Romandie. At the crossroads, turn left and walk 100 metres to the next crossroads.

(6) Take theGR® de Pays to the right, following the property’s hedge (do not take Rue de Verdonnelle). The path leads to the bottom of the Verdonnelle valley. At the bottom of the valley, turn right and cross the stream. Walk back up to the small road.

(7) Turn right and continue along the small road.

(8) Before the first houses in Montmarçon, turn left. Walk past the small castle and continue along the path, keeping to the one furthest to the right. Walk alongside the woods for 100m until you reach the crossroads.

(9) At the crossroads, turn left into the woods. Take the second path on the right and follow it south-west. Cross the Bois de Pargny and arrive at a T-junction in open ground.

(10) Turn left, then right 50 metres further on. You will arrive in Pargny-la-Dhuis. Cross the railway line and head down to the bottom of the village. Cross the Dhuis bridge, passing the wash house, the sports ground and the town hall, and continue to the D20.

(11) Turn right towards the cemetery. Follow the small road running alongside the cemetery for 50 metres.

(12) After the houses, look out for the grassy path on the right that follows the Dhuis Aqueduct. It is signposted with signs marked ‘PH’ and a number indicating the distance. Take the aqueduct path here (note: the entrance to the path is very close to the house, so don’t miss it). Take this path and, from this point onwards, always follow the Dhuis Aqueduct. The path crosses other paths and small roads; do not stray from it.

(13) Tricky stream crossing. Jump across the stones or take a detour via the small road. Continue north-north-east along the aqueduct.

(14) Another stream crossing. Then cross the road and head up the slope opposite. Pass beneath the Butte de Beaumont (a remarkable ecosystem).

(15) Cross the road and head straight ahead. Continue along the aqueduct. At the junction where you can see a silo, turn right onto the path leading down towards Condé-en-Brie. Walk past the care home, turn left and, at the roundabout, turn right to return to the starting point (S/E).

A short walk through part of the Verdonnelle Valley today: a magical place.

The woods between (4) and (6) are perfectly passable, and more pleasant than the road. No hunters out today, Wednesday.

Hello,

Indeed, the path has been removed; it now runs along the edge of the woodland. This wasn’t visible on the old IGN 25,000 scale map. Incidentally, the 50,000 scale map hasn’t been updated.

I have made the change.

The route is worth doing from the start, from Condé-en-Brie to Baulne-en-Brie, and at the end from Pargny-la-Dhuys to Condé-en-Brie (aqueduct), but is less interesting in the middle section, where the tarmac stretch gets a bit tedious (I should have taken the alternative route through the woods).
The pretty villages of Condé-en-Brie and Baulne-en-Brie
Note regarding the route: between points 1 and 2, between the hamlets of Le Haut des Clanières and Beauregard, the route is not straight as shown on the map, but follows the edge of the forest (the route on the map would take you across the field, but there is no path or track there).

Hello,

I did part of this route last week. There’s no need to take the small road after Baulne-en-Brie; the woods are perfectly passable. You can therefore follow the GRP between points (4) and (6).

Useful for checking that the routes I’m planning to take are accessible (some private estates are off-limits).
Very inspiring!

A very pleasant walk in the winter sunshine. The area is well worth exploring. It’s very hilly and lovely to walk through; there are plenty of scenic viewpoints and it’s absolutely peaceful. In short, a really good day’s walk.

I was able to cross the streams without much difficulty, but there’s always the option to take the road for the less adventurous. Be careful: the forest paths are quite muddy despite the lack of rain for a while.

Thanks to the person who suggested this route.

It’s a beautiful, and truly little-known, area just outside Paris. As it’s very dry, I think it was easy to cross the streams.

A lovely walk. I’d already walked along another, almost flat section of the Dhuis aqueduct, so I was surprised to find this stretch so hilly.
Washing houses in Condé and Pargny decorated with scenes evoking La Fontaine’s fables, and the gate of the former Petite Roquette prison (with an audio guide recounting its history) in Baulne.
To round off the practical information: a mini-market, bakery and public toilets in Condé; a picnic table by the banks of the Surmelin in Baulne.

Here’s a lovely walk, just an hour from Paris. The only tricky bit is crossing the streams, especially when the water’s high.
