Cols de Chauvet, Loubières and Véronne from Pontaix

Easy hike from the pretty village of Pontaix. Ascent into the Grand Barry Forest. Descent into the Ravin des Lots. The ruins of the castle are worth visiting for the view over the Drôme, and from the village you can access the waterfalls and pools of the Ruisseau des Lots.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Salle des Fêtes de Pontaix, Impasse de la Forge.

(S/E) Return to Ruelle du Tilleul and turn right onto Chemin de Véronne (road). Walk past the castle ruins.

(1) Continue straight ahead on Chemin de Véronne, leaving the path leading to the ruins on your left.

(2) Turn left and descend towards the Ruisseau des Lots stream without crossing it.

(3) Go up the path on the right after the bridge over a stream and reach the Col des Sagnes (elevation 505).

(4) Continue climbing straight ahead to reach the Col de Chauvet.

(5) Turn left onto the ridge path towards Col des Loubières. Ignore the first path on the right, then another on the left, and reach the pass.

(6) Continue along the path to reach Col de Véronne (elevation 603).

(7) Descend the marked path on the left towards Pontaix. Turn left in front of a ruined refuge.

(8) At Groslong, descend to the right along Chemin de Véronne, which runs alongside the Ruisseau des Lots stream.

(9) Continue straight ahead, leaving the path to Mourliet on your right, and you will reach a fork in the path that you passed on the way up.

(3) Continue to the right, keep right at the three-way junction about 50 metres further on and return to the initial three-way junction.

(1) Turn right onto the path leading to the ruins of Pontaix Castle, which overlooks the Drôme Valley: enjoy the view of the river and the village.

(10) Return to the previous fork.

(1) Turn right and follow the tarmac path down to the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful route with stunning views. However, there is an error in the instructions for points (2) and (3). When you pass the castle ruins, do not take the small path on the left that descends to the Lot stream. The path on the right after the small bridge does not lead to the Col des Sagnes and Col de Chauvet. It leads to two private properties, Les Clots and Mourliet (see IGN map), after 1.4 and 2.4 km respectively. Continue along the Véronne path for about 400-500 m, leaving the first path on your right, and take the path that climbs to the right towards the Col des Sagnes and Col de Chauvet.
